The “nepo baby” TikTok controversy: Sofia Coppola grounds daughter Romy for trying to charter a helicopter

Sofia Coppola’s daughter Romy shared on TikTok that her mother grounded her for trying to charter a helicopter. The 16-year-old deleted her account after the video started to go viral across all social media platforms. Romy Coppola had been on TikTok for a few weeks to respond about being a “nepo baby” and to share some family drama.

For the uninitiated, Romy Croquet Mars is the daughter of filmmaker Sofia Coppola and Phoenix lead singer, Thomas Mars. Despite being on the app for a limited time, Romy managed to gain over 29,000 TikTok followers. Her videos are mostly rants about people calling her a “nepo baby” and about her parents always being at work.

Romy’s TikTok rant about Sofia Coppola explained

It all started when Romy posted a video on her TikTok account which said, “Make a vodka sauce pasta with me because I’m grounded,” which is now deleted. In the video, she confessed that she tried to charter a helicopter from New York to Maryland on her dad’s credit card. She claimed she did it so that she can have dinner with her camp friend.

Romy created a TikTok account against her parents’ wish because according to her, she knew she was in trouble and grounded anyway. She held her father’s 2010 Grammy award and said this is why her parents do not want her to be on social media platforms.

Their relationship blossomed quickly and they have been together ever since. In 2006, Coppola and Mars welcomed their first child Romy. They later married in a private ceremony in southern Italy, in August 2011.

The couple has since had two more daughters, Cosima and Gio. They have often collaborated on projects together, with Mars contributing music to Coppola’s films, including Lost in Translation, for which he composed the song Too Long.
