Netflix is back with another spine-chilling investigative documentary and this time it revolves around the MH370, the Malaysian Airlines flight that mysteriously disappeared in 2014 without any trace. It’s been nine years since MH370 vanished with over 239 passengers and crew members and yet there’s no definite answer as to what happened to the flight. Â
The three-part Netflix docuseries addresses theories regarding this incident and also features interviews with relatives of victims. The MH370’s disappearance has been a major hunting ground for conspiracy theorists. However, the documentary takes fairly plausible theories into account without sensationalizing any. In fact, MH370: The Plane That Disappeared raises more questions than answers by connecting all the available dots.Â
Unlike any other plane crash, the remains of the flight or its passengers were nowhere to be found. The MH370’s black box, which could reveal details of the crash, is still missing. Although there have been instances of unidentified debris found over the years, connecting them to the Malaysian Airlines flight is still speculative.
Does the new documentary reveal anything new? Let’s find out.
Timeline of events in the MH370 Netflix documentary
- March 8, 2014: Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 departs Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, at 12:41 a.m. local time, bound for Beijing, China, with 239 passengers and crew on board. The aircraft disappears from radar screens less than an hour later, at 1:19 a.m., while flying over the South China Sea.
- March-April 2014: Search and rescue efforts commence for the missing MH370 flight and expand across regions such as South China Sea, Malacca Strait, Bay of Bengal, and the Andaman Sea.

- April 7, 2014: Malaysian authorities announce that flight MH370 presumably crashed in the southern Indian Ocean, with no survivors.
- July 2015 – January 2017: A comprehensive search of the Indian Ocean is conducted by Australia, Malaysia, and China, but no further trace of the aircraft is found.
- January 17, 2017: The search operation is officially suspended after failing to find any further trace of the aircraft.
All the theories behind the missing MH370 flight
One major theory is that the aircraft was deliberately flown off course by the pilot, Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah, who was reportedly going through personal problems. This theory is based on evidence that the aircraft’s communication systems were manually turned off. Also, Shah reportedly flew the aircraft in a deliberate pattern that suggested someone was attempting to evade detection.
Another theory suggests that the terrorists had hijacked the plane. They either intercepted and crashed the aircraft intentionally or diverted it to a secret location. However, no group has claimed responsibility for the disappearance of MH370.
#MH370 on #Netflix has me puzzled.
1.Why did they ignore the fact that the calls were going through & the girl and the dad?
2.Why is no one looking for the debris that was found in South China Sea?
3. How could they not track a plane that flew over the airspace of 6 countries?— Kimberly Muchina (@MuchinaKimberly) March 8, 2023
Other theories propose that the aircraft suffered a catastrophic mechanical failure that caused the aircraft to crash into the ocean. However, this does not explain why the aircraft flew for several hours after its last communication with air traffic control.
Despite the numerous theories and vague pieces of evidence, the family members of MH370 victims still have to live without any concrete answers.
