As the first episode of The Mandalorian Season 3 just premiered, fans were eager to know about the fate of Gina Carano’s Cara Dune in the show. For the uninitiated, Gina Carano was fired from the show in February 2021 following a series of controversial social media posts. The first episode has already answered questions on the actor’s exit from the show through a plot point.
As Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin and Grogu (Baby Yoda) return to Nevarro, they meet with old friend Greef Karga who tells them what happened to Cara Dune. Through a direct and expository dialogue halfway into the episode, Greef tells Mando that Marshal Dune was recruited by Special Forces after she brought in Moff Gideon.
So essentially, the creators and showrunners have not completely written Cara Dune off the show, nor have they done something drastic like killing her. With Gina Carano unlikely to return to The Mandalorian or any other Disney/Star Wars project, a recast is still not out of the equation.
Cara Dune’s character in The Mandalorian series
Cara Dune has been a fan favorite since the first season of the show. She made her first appearance on The Mandalorian in Chapter 4: Sanctuary. Gina Carano’s Cara Dune quickly shows her combat prowess in battle and becomes a valuable ally to the Mandalorian.

Over the course of the series, she helps him on several missions and protects Grogu from bounty hunters. Cara Dune’s background as a former shock trooper also makes her an excellent strategist. She often provides tactical advice to Mando during their missions.
While Cara Dune quickly became a fan favorite, the character also became embroiled in controversy due to comments made by the actress who portrayed her, Gina Carano.
The former MMA fighter was fired not just from The Mandalorian but also all future Star Wars projects including her role in Rangers of the New Republic, even before it was announced.
Timeline of Gina Carano’s controversy that got her fired

What to expect from The Mandalorian Season 3
Season 3 of The Mandalorian was off to a moderate start with the shortest ever season premiere episode clocking at nearly 35 minutes. The new season will try to fit into the wider Star Wars timeline while focusing on the journey of Din Djarin and Grogu.
Gina Carano’s departure will have a fairly decent impact on the story as her character had bonded well with both Baby Yoda and Mando.
The controversy surrounding her departure from The Mandalorian’s third season highlights the debate over free speech and cancel culture.
