Hantengu is the Upper Moon 4 of Muzan Kibutsuji’s brigade of the Kizuki in Demon Slayer. He has the power of division into four different forms, each of which possesses a different ability. The body regenerates into a separate demon, thereby making it difficult for the demon slayers to find his fatal point.
- Hantengu is a manifestation of various emotional stages of his life, each of which is a clone that operates freely once released. Hantengu is a timid creature who often tries to shift the blame to someone else and prove himself innocent.
- We can also look at how powerful his Blood Demon Art is and how he has manifested himself into separate selves. Hantengu’s death becomes the central argument of this article.
In this article, we will look at Hantengu’s life and death and the reasons behind the latter. Let’s begin!
Hantengu and Muzan’s order at the Infinity Castle
Hantengu was ordered by Muzan to find the Blue Spider Lily and also the Swordsmith village. During the arc, we see him climbing the roof of a building after having successfully found the village. He only wanted to escape Muzan’s wrath as the demon king has already disbanded the lower moons. Meeting the same fate as theirs terrified Hantengu.

Hantengu meets Tokito and Tanjiro and engages in a fierce battle. Genya and Nezuko also join the battle shortly after. We can see how the demon slayers’ secret village of swordsmiths was easily found by the Upper Moons. This shows the potential and power that they hold and also the threat they pose.
Hantengu and the demon slayers: a fight in Forms and Variations
Hantengu in Demon Slayer has the ability to divide when he is beheaded. He has four different selves within his body. They are Sekido, Karaku, Aizetsu and Urogi. Tanjiro fights Urogi while Nezuko and Genya fight the other three. During Tanjiro’s battle with Urogi, he finds out the weakness of Hantengu regarding his divisive ability.
Moreover, the fight between Genya and Aizetsu takes a different turn. Genya starts incorporating demonic abilities and this surprises the demons. While they desperately try to finish him off, he keeps regenerating and responding back with his attacks.

The frustrations among the demons rise and they grow furious and the long-drawn battle which has ensued. On the other hand, Tokito and Mitsuri also advance toward the village.
The long-drawn battle results in Hantengu dividing into many other forms and finally, Sekido absorbs the other emotional forms to result in a singular Hatred Demon. While this Hatred Demon was protecting the mini-fear version of Hantengu, the battle takes a rather unexpected turn.
The battle until dawn and Hantengu’s death

The battle with Hantengu continues until dawn. Tanjiro is injured as the two Hashiras along with Nezuko and Genya try to keep the Hatred Demon at bay. Toward the end, Tanjiro uses the Hinokami Kagura: Flame Dance to behead Sekido’s Hatred form. But the twist we were talking about was with reference to this part.
The head Tanjiro cut was not the real Hantengu and a headless version of his tries to run away as the sun starts to rise. Tanjiro finally finds Hantengu’s real body inside the headless one’s heart and slashes the torso. But the rather unexpected turn which was to decide the future course of the story is when Hantengu manages to inform Muzan of Nezuko’s ability to withstand the sun.
Conclusion
Hantengu was a peculiar demon in Demon Slayer who operated in a very distinct manner. He was the epitome of conflict and he signified the inner controversies and conflicts of man. Hantengu was, therefore, the antagonist of a serious narrative that explored the conflicting nature of individuals and also the accommodation of the same.
