Studio Ghibli’s ‘Kimitachi wa Do Ikiru Ka’ Anime Movie: Everything we know so far

Kimitachi wa Dou Ikiru ka

Studio Ghibli’s recent production Kimitachi wa Do Ikiru Ka, also known as ‘How Do You Live?‘ is a film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. It has been named after Genzaburo Yoshino’s 1937 novel by the same name.

The original story is however not connected to the novel and the project has been termed as a ‘big fantastical film’. The film is set to release in Japan on July 14, 2023, while it has been popularly noted that the film refrains from any promotional as well as trailers, apart from a single poster before release.

The background of Kimitachi wa Do Ikiru Ka – Hayao Miyazaki’s signature as his last featured film project

The anime film Kimitachi wa Do Ikiru Ka or How Do You Live? is said to be derived and adapted from the 1937 novel of the same name by Genzaburo Yoshino. It was first released as a serial publication by Yuzo Yamamoto and after WWII it went through major changes, ultimately being republished in the year 1945.

Kimitachi wa Do Ikiru Ka is considered a popular work of Japanese classical literature and it propagates the ideas of progressive culturalism in a modern light. It has been reproduced as a child of Hayao Miyazaki.

Moreover, the most interesting element of the film is its absence of any commercial promotion or trailer. The only released poster is a hand-drawn artwork, with Miyazaki hand animating every frame of this movie.

The plot of Kimitachi wa Do Ikiru Ka – a basic premise

The story of Kimitachi wa Do Ikiru Ka follows the life of a young boy named Junichi Honda, nicknamed Koperu. He is a gifted teenager and lives with his uncle but despite being good in sports and academics he struggles at school. Koperu and his uncle share their emotional burdens through writing and also in person.

The narration of the story is extremely peculiar. The narrator constantly shifts between Koperu and his uncle and we see them dealing with themes like poverty, self-development, and spiritual growth.

Miyazaki has therefore attempted to alleviate this spectrum of themes and he will be focusing on the workings of the human mind in a conflicted human experience through the use of artistic as well as fantastical elements.

How Do You Live? – release dates and Hayao Miyazaki’s legacy

How Do You Live? or Kimitachi wa Do Ikiru Ka is set to release across Japan on July 14, 2023. However, it has delayed its premiere across significant film festivals and has refrained from releasing any possible dates for a worldwide release.

Moreover, Hayao Miyazaki’s legacy is the sole advertising element for the anime, and fans worldwide have been anticipating seeing the artist’s final work in theatres.

Hayao Miyazaki is known for some of the most prolific anime films ever. He is the co-founder of Studio Ghibli and has collaborated on 10 films so far with the studio.

He is known for classics like My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Princess Mononoke. His most famous and most critically acclaimed work Spirited Away (2001) received the Academy Award for Best Animation Feature and has been marked as one of the greatest animated works of the 2000s.

Conclusion

Kimitachi wa Do Ikiru Ka by Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli is not just a film about the exploration of the human mind but also the conflicts in the constrained world order. The anime which is set to release in July 2023 will not only be Miyazaki’s final project but also a reflection of his long career and mark his retirement from the industry.
