Cyberpunk Edgerunners Season 2 is not going to happen says CD Projeckt

The gallant story of David Martinez, spoiler alert for Cyberpunk Edgerunners Season 2, ended with a cyber-emotional tone, and it ain’t happening. That’s a new term for defining the finest breeds of Cyberpunk epic stories that really hit the bar with the audience (which I have conceptualized).

Such is the refinement of the anime series based on CD Projekt made Cyberpunk 2077. It was noted before the anime was ever released, but it seems the producers felt the need to reinvigorate the anime fandom that this anime was meant to be standalone.

Cyberpunk Edgerunners Season 2 is an unlikely venture, as revealed in the recent developments. The Netflix series is a cyberpunk web anime animated by Studio Trigger. It premiered on Netflix in September 2022 and told the story of David Martinez one year prior to the events of the game. Critics praised every aspect of the series including its story, narration, characters, scores, etc.

A recent interview held by Famitsu with CD Projeckt’s Japanese Manager unveiled the news

The critical acclaim came as a bonus that reintroduced many who were previously initiated into the world made by Mike Pondsmith. We already did a brutal (if I were to be so self-praising) review of Edgerunners, and you agreed with us.

Today we bring to you segments from a recent interview held by the famous Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu. The interview featured the CD Projekt Red’s Japanese community manager Satoru Honma. The Japanese representative reiterated how “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was planned as a standalone work.”

What Honma had to say about Cyberpunk Edgerunners Season 2

“I personally would like to continue to work with Japanese studios to produce more anime in the future, partly because we have received very good feedback.” Honma informed.

“However, just to be clear, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was planned as a standalone work, so there’s no such thing as ‘we are actually working on Season 2 in the background.”

The show’s popularity had notably skyrocketed in its premiere. The 10 Episode series on Netflix had a domino effect, however.

“Overseas people say that the anime has given CDPR a second chance. We are grateful to TRIGGER for giving us a chance to enjoy the story of V and Johnny Silverhand after watching the anime.”

In September the official Twitter account of Cyberpunk 2077 tweeted and it read that “Each day of this week Night City has been visited by 1 million players, both new and returning.” The show’s popularity and a new patch for the game reimmersed people’s forgotten hype for what was once the most hyped open-world game anticipation ever.

Concluding

CD Projekt is probably not going to make another season for the show anytime soon. This was painfully evident from the way the protagonist went. Spoiler Alert, he died. The possibilities of a second season didn’t go undiscussed on the internet. The producers, however, probably know that sponging too much out of the same thing may only diminish its glitter.

“Even if we could make more anime in the future, I don’t know if it would be Season 2 or something completely different.”

Studio Trigger animated the 10 Episode-long Netflix show. The Tokyo-based animation company appointed director Hiroyuki Imaishi for the job. Imaishi previously left his legacy known through staggering works such as Gurren Lagann, Kill La Kill, etc. The animation blueprint of which was evident in the style of the show. As such Cyberpunk Edgerunners Season 2 seems to be a forlorn dream, one not worth dreaming. And in this way, maybe one should contend with the beauty of a story that ends.
