Is Attack on Titan Final Season Part 3 going to be a film?

With only a few weeks to go before the release of Attack on Titan The Final Season Part 3, MAPPA has revealed that the debut episode on March 4, 2023, will be a one-hour-long special. But does that mean that it is a film?

The story, penned by Hajime Isayama, follows the tale of Eren Yeager and his evolution from wanting to destroy all Titans and humanity to protecting those closest to him from harm. Now, Mappa seems to be wanting to divide Attack on Titan Final Season Part 3 into multiple parts too. Again.

What is the show’s episode-distributing habits?

Attack on Titan has pressed certain core issues for fans with its abrupt naming and seasoned cours. The previous Anime installments of Shingeki no Kyojin by WIT Studios followed a different but mainstream pattern.

They would release 25 episodes in one cour (one continuous run.) Although as the series progressed, Season 2 followed two separate cour releases. Even Season 3 was segregated.

How many different parts has the show been rendered into?

But so far, Attack on Titan Final Season has been rendered in a total of three different parts. The first part ran in 2020 and finished by 2021 April. Attack on Titan Final Season 2nd part came in 2022.

Now finally in 2023, we are awaiting the third part. At this point, it wouldn’t be abnormal for one to stumble upon Mappa memes. Focusing especially on just how many more final parts are going to be birthed into the world.

When will they release the different parts?

MAPPA has announced the format for the release of Attack on Titan The Final Season Part 3, with the first part being an hour-long special episode premiering on March 4, 2023, at 12:25 am JST.

The second part, which will serve as the final conclusion to the series, is planned to come out later in the year, though no specific release date has been announced yet.

A comparison with Demon Slayer Season 3

Now you may have heard that Demon Slayer Season 3 has done something similar. They have started their world tour and released the film called To The Swordsmith village. What that basically is, is the one-hour-long special episode number 1 coupled with the last two episodes of the previous season.

In this way, they compile enough material for a theatrical release. However, the film does not compare with legit feature films (such as Mugen Train).

Attack on Titan Final Season Part 3 is not a film. At least not technically so. It may end up doing something similar to Demon Slayer Season 3 tour. Now the idea that the first part will be an hour or more long special episode indicates a few things.

And this must be understood conjunctively with our previous article, where we considered how many episodes AOT Final Season Part 3 will have.

For the uninitiated, the sound director of the show released a photo on Twitter. The photo contained a booklet mentioning episodes 29-35.

Concluding

Hence we concluded last time that the Attack on Titan Final Season Part shall at least have 7 episodes. If the one-hour-long special is worth 3 episodes or more, then the second part which is scheduled for later release could just be a movie on its own.

Although the special episode does feel like a movie, it technically is still a special episode. One-hour-long episodes are not uncommon.
