As the MCU gears up for The Marvels’ release in November, there is still a majority of fans who have little to no idea about Kamala Khan AKA Ms. Marvel or her powers. Of course, the character needs no introduction to avid comic book readers as well as those who watched the Disney+ series. However, given that the Pakistani-origin superhero is making her cinematic debut, it’s not a bad time for a refresher on who Kamala Khan is and what are her powers as Ms. Marvel in the comic book storyline as well as the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Exploring Kamala Khan’s character
Kamala Khan was a significant step for Marvel towards diversity and representation in their comics. The Pakistani-American teenager from New Jersey made her Marvel Comics debut in 2014. The character was created by writer G. Willow Wilson and artist Adrian Alphona.
Ms. Marvel quickly became a breakout character and a symbol of inclusivity in Marvel. The comics addressed themes like struggles with identity, family, and adolescence. It showed that anyone can be a hero and more importantly, a hero can come from anywhere.
Kamala’s transformation into Ms. Marvel was a defining moment. She stepped into the role of her idol, Carol Danvers, the former Ms. Marvel and now Captain Marvel. As a Muslim character, her religious and cultural background are crucial to her narrative.
What are Ms. Marvel’s powers?
Shapeshifting is Ms Marvel AKA Kamala Khan’s main power. When Kamala was exposed to the Terrigen Mist, her latent Inhuman lineage was activated. This was a result of Blackagar Boltagon’s actions as Black Bolt of the Inhumans.

Her polymorphic ability allows her to stretch and alter her body shape in almost any way imaginable. With this power, Kamala can elongate her limbs, adjust her height and size, and even mimic the appearance of other individuals or objects.
Kamala also has an accelerated healing factor and recovers quickly from injuries. However, using her other powers disrupts the healing, leaving her heavily fatigued and hungry. Over time, Kamala discovers that she is also a mutant, making her a rare hybrid.
Did Marvel kill Kamala Khan in the comics?
There is a lot of buzz around whether Kamala Khan is still alive in Marvel Comics. In the Amazing Spider-Man #26 (2023) comic book, Ms. Marvel sacrifices herself and dies to protect Mary Jane Watson from a villain named Rabin.

Despite the initial shock around this highly publicized death, Marvel soon revived Kamala in Hellfire Gala 2023 #1. They revealed that she had only been dead for a few days. This raised a lot of questions on why they even did it.
The X-Men‘s resurrection powers did not just bring Kamala back to life but also used Emma Frost’s psychic abilities to erase any memory of her death. Her family and friends were made to believe that she had been on a school trip to Washington DC.
Ms Marvel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
Portrayed by Marvel superfan Iman Vellani, Kamala Khan is all set to dazzle the big screen with her debut in The Marvels. Her Disney+ miniseries from 2022 was a fresh addition to the MCU with 98% on Rotten Tomatoes.
In the upcoming movie, Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Kamala Khan team up to save the multiverse. The Marvels will be released in the US on November 10, 2023, as a part of Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
