14 Peaks: Nothing is Impossible – An Enthralling Documentary

Mountains call to us. Mountains inspire us. Peace, serenity, and calmness. At the same time, it can also prove to be challenging and is beautifully dangerous. This documentary, 14 Peaks: Nothing is Impossible, is about attaining impossibility and turning it into a possibility. It is not an individual effort but a true story of collective struggle. Like the old tales that taught us, it is easy to break if we are one. If we bunch up in bundles, we become incorrigible, and we can overcome any mountain, or mountains in this case!

Without delving much into details (minor spoiler alert!), 14 Peaks: Nothing is Impossible is a documentary that revolves around Nepali mountaineer Nirmal “Nims” Purja, who is determined to conquer the impossible. He starts a project called “Project Possible,” which entails climbing a total of fourteen mountains in 7 months. This approximately measures up to covering EIGHT THOUSAND METERS.

The documentary showcases his and Sherpas’ arduous yet fascinating journey as he navigates through narrow, slippery, snow-clad mountains—all the while challenging death, natural disasters, and helping others on the way. Also, the motto of “never leave anyone behind” is amplified well throughout the documentary. The documentary celebrates the collective effort behind climbing mountains and portrays the unnamed struggles, the emotional turmoil, and everything associated with climbing mountains.

Moving Beyond the Narrative of Individual Effort

Much like a group project, a particular person often steals the limelight. Others’ efforts are often sidelined. What this documentary did differently is that it acknowledged the role of Sherpas. It shone a light on the Sherpas and why the masses always ignore their efforts. Traditionally, Sherpas have been climbing the mountains since time immemorial.

If you want to climb mountain ranges, you would require the assistance of a Sherpa. They know the roads, the terrain, and all other know-hows. So, basically, behind every other successful mountaineer, there is the effort of Sherpa. Hence, Edmund Hillary is nothing without Tenzing Norgay.

Instead of going through a mainstream portrayal of a “hero” figure, 14 Peaks: Nothing is Impossible emphasizes the role of Sherpas. The success of Nims Purja in climbing fourteen mountain tops within an extremely short span of seven months was a result of the collective effort made by him, his fellow partners, and, most importantly, his Sherpa.

The Appeal of the Impossible in Times of COVID-19

Well, yes, I am dragging the COVID-19 pandemic even into movie reviews! This documentary draws a unique eulogy that we all desperately need right now; to hope on to climbing the “insurmountable” coronavirus pandemic. Hopefully, the worst is over now, and the remnants of the pandemic will fade away soon.

Last year, we were locked in our houses and the world around us went all-virtual. Changes can be challenging to accept, acknowledge, and embrace. But the whole of humanity around the world accepted this change. But little did we know that it might take a toll on us. We might experience burnout. If we accept all the help around and move together as a bundle instead of an individual, the journey seems easier.
