Two iconic movies hit the theaters on the 21st of July marking the two biggest same-day releases in history. Greta Gerwig’s pink fictional Barbie movie and Christopher Nolan’s biopic drama Oppenheimer are set to make millions at the box office. Well, Warner Bros.’ Barbie marked the biggest domestic opening day with $70.5 Million in previews. On the other hand, Oppenheimer was still exceptional by securing $33 Million at the domestic box office.

The hype for the movie inspired by Mattel marquee dolls led by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling has already cleared the historical drama starring Cillian Murphy by creating twice as more at the box office (domestically). Worldwide, Barbie had just soared past the $150 Million – $158.9 Million to be exact – mark and could potentially look at a $300 Million opening weekend in 70 countries. Despite being banned in Vietnam, Barbie movie has already surpassed its $145 Million budget in just its opening day.
Meanwhile, the explosive and mind-boggling Oppenheimer collected $33 Million domestically and $15.9 Million from 78 international territories on its opening day
The debut of Christopher Nolan’s R-rated biopic drama/thriller has exceeded expectations. The film is positively received by both the audience and critics alike. As the ratings are going, Oppenheimer will be expected to gross $165-$170 Million in its opening weekend. If that happens, this would be Christopher Nolan’s third-highest-grossing opening weekend behind The Dark Knight Rises ($131 M) and The Dark Knight ($94 M).

Barbie + Oppenheimer = Barbenheimer meme explained
For starters, Barbie and Oppenheimer are complete polar opposites. The former is a fantasy romantic comedy, while the latter is a historical drama/thriller. Everyone also knows that Barbie the movie is based on the famous dolls made by Mattel. On the other hand, Oppenheimer is inspired by a real person, J. Robert Oppenheimer, creator of the atomic bomb, and is set during World War 2. Moreover, Barbie is directed by Greta Gerwig, a director who is relatively new to making big projects while Oppenheimer is helmed by the award-winning director, Christoper Nolan.
Aside from that, Barbie is comprised of pink and vibrant colors and obviously with a touch of whimsical vibes and nostalgia. Meanwhile, Oppenheimer is dark, and gritty, and is reportedly going to blow everyone’s mind. With all of these comparisons, the Barbenheimer meme was born. Mixing two different pop culture references gave birth to the sensational #Barbenheimer on TikTok. Although they are very different from each other, they will explode on the same day. Both Barbie and Oppenheimer will hit the theaters on July 21, 2023. On a side note, both of these movies are also going to be very confidential. Barbie was just banned in Vietnam due to “offensive political imagery” following a depiction of the nine-dash line in a scene. On the other hand, Oppenheimer is reportedly going to leave a lot of people shocked, especially in Japan.
