Will Gonzaga Bulldogs forward Drew Timme declare for the 2023 NBA draft?

Drew Timme 2023 March Madness

Gonzaga is making another great push for the NCAA championship this year with the help of their undisputed superstar, Drew Timme. Last year, the star forward announced that he is joining the NBA draft but withdrew in April. After seeing huge improvement this year and his stellar performance in March Madness, will Drew Timme commit to the 2023 NBA draft?

Last year, Drew Timme committed to the 2022 NBA draft but decided to withdraw and return to Gonzaga for his senior year

Back when his then-teammate, Chet Holmgren, declared for the 2022 NBA draft, the Gonzaga star forward Drew Timme also made headlines by joining Holmgren in hopes of landing on an NBA team. However, weeks before the draft proper, Timme withdrew and decided to return to play for the Bulldogs for one last season.

Prior to last year’s draft, Timme was averaging 18.4 points and 6.8 rebounds for the Zags. He was also projected a second-rounder by most mock drafts and even received feedback that he will be undrafted in 2022. It may have been the reason he opted to return to Gonzaga for his senior year and improve his play.

Will Drew Timme declare for the 2023 NBA draft?

Last month, Drew Timme announced that this will be his last year playing with the Bulldogs and will not return for a 5th year. According to the Athletic, the basketball star said “I’m a senior, and I’m moving on”, hinting that he will be leaving the Gonzaga Bulldogs after this season.

Although he has not made any announcement regarding his commitment to the 2023 NBA draft yet, it’s obvious he will be possibly joining Victor Wembanyama, Scoot Henderson, and Markquis Nowell in the 2023 class. In the 2022-2023 NCAA season, he made career-high averages in points, assists, rebounds, and blocks (21.2 PPG, 3.2 APG, 7.0 RPG, and 1.0 BPG). He has also led his team to the Elite Eight of this year’s tournament.

Drew Timme’s scouting report: Potential second-round pick in the making

According to mock drafts and scouting reports from expert analysts, Drew Timme has a high chance of getting picked in the second round of the 2023 NBA draft. With a very talented 2023 class with heavily anticipated players like Victor Wembanyama, we couldn’t blame them for why Timme could get picked late.

The 23-year-old forward is a fundamentally sound player who can score at will. He played 4 years in college and truthfully, he has improved every year that he has been playing. As a freshman – although impressive – he only averaged 9.8 points and 5.4 rebounds. But, he improved in the following years and became a double-double machine. Undeniably, he also became the leader of the Bulldogs who constantly leads them to win games. In addition, Timme has already made or even broken records in the NCAA.

By the time he enters the draft, Drew Timme will be 23 years old. He also stands at 6 feet and 10 inches but he would be an undersized center in the NBA. His biggest strength is being an overwhelming low-post player who can also play defense. However, he definitely needs to learn how to shoot the ball on the perimeter. If you look closely, he’s got that Alperen Sengun vibe. A non-athletic big man who relies on his footwork and fundamentals to contribute. Sengun is an effective player and hopefully, Timme becomes a similar or even better player.
