Why do Indian NGOs want to ban Level Infinite’s Undawn in the country?

Undawn is a free-to-play open-world survival RPG released on Mobile and PC. The game is developed by LightSpeed Studios and published by Level Infinite. It is a recent release that came out on 15th of June, 2023. We need to pay attention to the fact that Tencent is the parent company for the publishing house named Level Infinite. The Chinese giant wanted to re-enter the Indian market with this particular title.

However, there seems to be an unrest among the Indian audience regarding Undawn. Even some NGOs from the country are protesting against the game and calling for its ban. We should take a look at the reasons behind that. But first, let’s take a look at the game.

What is Undawn?

  • At its core, it’s a survival game set in a post-apocalyptic world run over by zombies. The players will need to gather resources, build bases, craft items and fend against the undead creatures.
  • There is a range of weapons, primarily guns, available in the game that will help to fight against the zombies. The game is an online multiplayer so you can enjoy it with your friends or other people around the world as well.
  • Undawn features a storyline that the players can experience through both cutscenes and character interactions.
  • The game features an open-world map, so the players are mostly free to do whatever they like. This is an impressive feat for a game launched on mobile devices. It also includes modes featuring both PvE and PvP gameplay elements.
  • The title features prominent Hollywood actor Will Smith as an in-game character. This star cast might appeal to several audiences.

Why do Indian NGOs want to ban the game?

There are a variety of reasons behind the action of the NGOs. We should take a look at them now.

  • Firstly, all Chinese games and apps have been banned in India for quite a while. So, even if Tencent wants to make a comeback with abiding policies, it will always be met with skepticism. Both national and personal security could be at risk with data breaches or loopholes.
  • Coming to Undawn, coincidentally, it was released on the same date (June 15th) as the Galwan Valley Clash of 2020. The Galwan Valley incident is an event where 20 Indian army personnel were killed in a military tension against the Chinese forces. The NGOs see this move as mockery and disrespect, even if it is coincidental.
  • The game additionally features gameplay with characters wearing military uniforms and wielding assault rifles in a war like environment. The NGOs deem this to be reflective of the Galwan incident as well. So, they are heavily protesting against the game and appealing for its ban within the country.
  • Assam-based NGO PRAHAR is mainly behind these activities and looks to take legal steps for the game’s ban. Reportedly, they will also appeal against the battle royale Battleground Mobile India, which was recently unbanned after a long period.

Those are some of the most notable reasons why Indian NGOs call for the ban of Undawn in the country. What are your thoughts regarding this? Let us know in the comments below.
