Why did Disney’s Snow White live-action replace the Seven Dwarves? | Fans React

netizens criticize Disney's, Snow White

Disney is taking a new approach for its upcoming live-action adaptation of the famous fairy tale Snow White and the seven dwarves. The film features Latina actress Rachel Zegler as the Disney princess and seven ‘magical creatures’ of various sizes, gender, and origins. The film will be unique as they have also decided to omit the prince and focus more on Snow White’s ambitions to lead.

These modifications are gaining significant backlash from the netizens for using ‘political correctness‘ and ‘woke propaganda’ to an extreme. Many fairy tale fans question the filmmakers’ decisions, especially regarding the casting. This is the second Disney live-action film to receive mixed reactions from people following The Little Mermaid with a Black Ariel.

The live-action version of the 1937 film has been receiving criticism since its announcement. However, it especially became a matter of discussion after images of its filming in Bedfordshire, England, went viral on social media. The photos show Rachel Zegler as Snow White, followed by her colorful friends of various races, genders, and sizes.

  • This decision of inclusivity gained immense backlash for modernizing the classic fairy tale, and many netizens find it forced and distasteful. In an interview with Marc Maron last 2022, the Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage, who has a form of dwarfism, also criticized the film regarding its take on the disability.

He confessed feeling surprised by a Latina Snow White and then criticized that the makers are creating a progressive film with the backward script of seven dwarfs living in some cave. The actor asked what they were doing and if he hadn’t contributed enough for such stereotypes to cease prevailing.

  • In response to the backlash, Disney confessed that it is taking a different approach to avoid the stereotypes of the original fairy tale. This turns out to replace the dwarves with ‘magical creatures’ played by actors with different cultures and looks.

Twitter reacts

The netizens’ reaction to these changes remains negative. Many people claim that time falls under the category of ‘Go Woke Go Broke.’ They also felt confused about what the filmmakers were trying to convey through the changes.

  • Moreover, they criticized the makers for ‘breaking the stereotypes‘ in a project where it doesn’t fit while continuing to ignore inclusive actions in modern projects. Actor Dylan Postl also stated that the dwarf roles should have gone for someone who fits the character. Check out some of the netizens’ reactions below:
