  • Hiroya Oku wrote and illustrated the Japanese science fiction manga series called Inuyashiki (いぬやしき). It was serialized in Kodansha’s Seinen manga magazine from January 2014 to July 2017, and the ten tankōbon volumes compiled the chapters.
  • The plot revolves around two individuals who gain super abilities through a mysterious event but differ in their approach to using them.

It follows the protagonist Ichiro Inuyashiki, a 58-year-old man, who is diagnosed with cancer and faces neglect and disrespect from his family and society. But after a mysterious event, he discovers he has been given incredible superhuman abilities.

Despite the newfound power, he must learn to navigate the complex consequences that come with being a hero, including facing off against other superhumans who use their abilities for evil purposes.

  • These include the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Central and South America. Scandinavian countries such as Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland are added as well.

The anime television series adaptation of Inuyashiki was produced by MAPPA and aired on Fuji TV’s Noitamina late-night programming block from October to December 2017. Additionally, a live-action film adaptation premiered in Japan in April 2018.

Is Inuyashiki in the same universe as Gantz?

With the thematic overlapping, many individuals often wonder if Inuyashiki is based on the same universe as Gantz. Let me clarify that Inuyashiki is a distinct work and has no connection to Gantz or any similarities to it.

Nevertheless, the creator of Inuyashiki aimed to provide an unforgettable experience for viewers, which is accomplished through the two main characters: Ichiro Inuyashiki and Hiro Shishigami. These two characters are complete opposites, like yin and yang.

The anime adaptation by studio MAPPA is of the highest quality. The first few episodes showcase MAPPA’s capability in handling CGI, while the character designs effectively portray Ichiro’s frail innocence and Hiro’s deceptive handsomeness. The setting of Tokyo remains consistent with modern times, and the action and violence are also notable.

However, it’s important to note that the violence is over-the-top, particularly in later episodes with copious amounts of blood, blown-off body parts, and gunfights. There’s little censorship, so expect explicit content. Unfortunately, MAPPA overestimated itself in some areas in later episodes, particularly with the flight scenes and pure action movements.
