dbrand is a company famous for making skins and wraps that can be applied on smartphones, computers, and consoles like the PlayStation 5. Their products are pretty popular all over the globe for the build quality and design. However, for some people, the pricing can be a tad towards the higher side.
With the launch of PlayStation 5, naturally dbrand started producing custom skins and plates for the device. During that time, they were particularly sought-after since Sony was yet to release the official custom face plates. However, it didn’t take long for Sony to drag the matter to the court. They served the skin company a cease and desist order over an infringement of design. For the time, dbrand had to comply with the decree by halting all promotions and sales of that particular product.
But it is evident that dbrand was not going to back away so quickly when we look at their next move. To Sony’s surprise, they announced Darkplates 2.0. It was the same custom cover, but with a revamped design language that deviated from Sony’s patented design. Let’s look at some of the new features of this product.
Darkplates 2.0
- The pointy ends towards the top of the console were replaced with a more smooth and oval look. This curved design element was essential to bypass Sony’s officially patented design that is present on all the default covers. This also gave the console a new and distinctive look which might appeal to many.
- dbrand added vents at both sides of the panel to maintain airflow which lowers the internal temperature during usage. It comes with a removable dust filter that you may or may not use according to your environment. This was a functional addition that should help in optimal operation of the device.
- Along with the Darkplates 2.0, you can buy additional skins for the middle section and LED light strips that will result in a brilliant glow with the colors of your choice.
- They have replaced the tiny square, triangle, circle and cross symbols from the plate as a result of the lawsuit.
- Instead, inside the panel they have printed a binary message with 0s and 1s that when deciphered, literally translates to the cease and desist email that Sony sent to them. This is clearly a mockery of the bigger corporation.
- While some have regarded this as arrogance and scummy, others are perceiving it as a boss move.
