Chainsaw Man has been riding a frantic ride up toward the hill called profit. Ever since the Manga found its release, it has been one of the most anticipated Anime releases ever. And when Studio MAPPA finally brought it out into Animated flesh, the world was bewildered. But there are some obvious questions that arise when one is so engrossed in the Anime. About the world setting of Chainsaw Man
- The world in which the story is set features Devils known as Akuma (typical Japanese translation for Devils). These Akuma are born from human fears. By sacrificing something, humans can establish contracts with Devils, which grants them the Devil’s power.
- Devils can also become Fiends by possessing the dead bodies of humans. However, there exist individuals known as Devil Hunters (or Debiru Hanta as they are pronounced) who specialize in hunting and controlling them.
When does Chainsaw Man Take place?

The story takes place in 1997 in an alternate timeline where the Soviet Union still exists, and several historical events such as the Holocaust, AIDS, and nuclear weapons have been erased from history due to the Chainsaw Devil consuming their respective Devils.Â

The latest issue provided an exciting and informative read as Hirofumi Yoshida engaged in a discussion with the Famine Devil Fami about a Nostradamus prophecy that he believes is connected to her and the other Four Horsemen Devils.
What is the Nostradamus prophecy about?
According to the prophecy, a powerful king of terror will arrive in July 1999. Yoshida explained that this prophecy has received attention for predicting the end of humanity. Public Safety took the prophecy seriously and had 30 inmates make contracts with the Future Devil to learn the date of their death.
- Surprisingly, 23 of the 30 were informed that they would die in July 1999, which matches the prophecy’s seventh-month reference.
- Yoshida suspects that Fami’s behavior is connected to the prophecy, and warns that he will treat her as a Devil if she does not cooperate.
When does Chainsaw Man part 2 take place?
Yoshida’s comments and discussion about the Nostradamus prophecy in the latest Chainsaw Man issue provide fans with an idea of when the second part of the series might occur. Context clues from earlier chapters also offer additional hints regarding the timeframe.
- Based on the conversation between Yoshida and Fami, it is evident that part 2 happens well before July 1999. Yoshida’s cautious approach in discussing the matter with Fami implies that there is still some time before July 1999 arrives.
- This is supported by Fami’s statement that seven of the thirty prisoners will die this week, and that the current Devil appearance is only the first step in the process.
Taking all of these clues into account, fans can infer that part 2 of the story takes place sometime between spring of 1998 to 1999.
