A revolution is cooking in the electric vehicle (EV) industry all thanks to Ford and Tesla’s new collaboration. If you own a Ford, you will soon be able to use Tesla’s Supercharger network for fast-charging your EV. One key aspect of this collaboration is the adoption of Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) port by Ford’s next-generation EVs. The move not only benefits Ford’s customers but also sets a precedent for future collaborations between automakers.
The news comes straight from the National Charging Experience Consortium. Ford CEO Jim Farley and Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that this partnership will come into effect in early 2024. The collaboration will open up more than 12,000 Tesla Superchargers to Ford vehicles. By the end of 2024, Tesla has also promised to open at least 3,500 of its Supercharger stations to all EVs.
Ford EVs to use Tesla’s Supercharger starting in 2024
The new partnership between Ford and Tesla will give owners of Ford electric trucks and SUVs easy access to more than 12,000 Tesla V3 Superchargers in the US and Canada.
Starting from early 2024, Ford’s BlueOval Charge network will merge with Tesla’s NACS Supercharger network using a special hardware adapter. In addition, Ford’s upcoming next-generation EVs in 2025 will come with Tesla’s charging port already built-in.

During the announcement, Elon Musk spoke about having fair access to reliable EV charging as he feels that Tesla Superchargers should not be restricted. The Twitter CEO wants Tesla to create an inclusive EV charging ecosystem which enables other automakers like Ford to connect to their charging infrastructure with ease.
To make the transition smoother, Tesla will develop a new adapter. This will allow Ford EVs, which are compatible with EV chargers using CCS plugs, to connect to Tesla’s Superchargers, including the latest Version 3 chargers.
The adapters will be provided to customers purchasing any of Ford’s EV models, such as the popular F-150 Lightning truck, Mustang Mach-E, and E-Transit delivery van.
Tesla’s NACS and Ford’s BlueOval explained
NACS is the standardized version of Tesla’s proprietary charging system. It ensures compatibility between Ford’s EVs and Tesla’s charging infrastructure. It also eliminates the need for separate charging solutions. With this integration, Ford EV owners will gain access to the vast Supercharger network.
While Ford embraces Tesla’s charging infrastructure, the company will continue to expand its own BlueOval charging network. By early 2024, Ford plans to add another 1,800 DC fast charging stations to its network.
The BlueOval Charge network is a collection of EV charging providers that Ford customers can use. They can find and access these charging stations through their onboard route-planning software, the FordPass mobile app, or other ways.
Ford already has access to over 10,000 DC fast-charging stations from various networks like Electrify America, EVgo, and ChargePoint. Soon, these stations will be joined by Tesla’s extensive network of over 12,000 Supercharging points.
