What happened to Mandalore? Mandalorian Season 3 sets up return to the cursed planet

The new third season premiere episode of The Mandalorian set up Din Djarin’s return to the cursed planet of Mandalore after the Purge, in order to redeem himself. The character had broken the sacred Mandalorian Creed by removing his helmet in front of others. Mando’s only source of redemption is to bathe in the living waters under the mines of Mandalore.

But what exactly happened to Mandalore and why is it destroyed in the current storyline? The home-world of the Mandalorians, a warrior culture that has played a significant role in the Star Wars franchise.

The planet was crystallized by the Empire in the Great Purge of Mandalore which wiped out most of the population in the infamous Night of a Thousand Tears. This is why all the Mandalorian warriors that we meet in the series are scattered across the galaxy.

How did the Purge of Mandalore happen?

In the Star Wars saga, the Purge of Mandalore was a devastating event that occurred towards the end of the Clone Wars. The conflict between the Republic and the Separatists left Mandalore devastated, and its people struggling to rebuild their society.

The Mandalorian culture, which had been proud and strong, was left in ruins. The survivors of the conflict had to rebuild their society from scratch. Many of the Mandalorian warriors turned to a life of bounty hunting and mercenary work to survive.

The Purge of Mandalore is referenced multiple times throughout the Mandalorian series, and it’s clear that it has had a lasting impact on the Mandalorian people. Din Djarin himself is a survivor of the Purge. His experiences during the conflict have had a profound effect on Pedro Pascal’s character.

Will The Mandalorian return to his homeworld in Season 3?

Din Djarin himself is a member of a secretive group of Mandalorian warriors known as The Tribe. The group have taken it upon themselves to protect and preserve their way of life. One of the missions is to protect Grogu from Imperial Forces, which forms the crux of the series.

Season 3 of The Mandalorian will heavily project the aftermath of the Purge of Mandalore. Mandalore was already a rough planet to live in and the wars had almost entirely wiped out the native population.

The fate of Mandalore outside The Mandalorian series

More than The Mandalorian series, other Star Wars films and shows often portray what happened to Mandalore and its people. In fact, the Purge has been just a recurring reference to what transpired at the end of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.

Din Djarin’s expulsion came in Chapter 5 of The Book of Boba Fett as the episode’s flashbacks reflected the events in The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels series.

When Din Djarin returns to the Way of the Mandalore using the living waters beneath the mines, it’s hard to imagine what the toxic planet will look like to the exiled warrior.
