Ukrainian Athletes Comments on the Ukraine-Russia Crisis

The crisis between Ukraine and Russia has been a worldwide sensation this week. It already has caught the attention of different athletes from all around the globe.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had just announced that he was executing a “special military operation” in Ukraine earlier this week (Thursday, February 24).

It has already stirred sympathy, condemnation, and fear from Ukrainian athletes, as well as the Russians.

Alex Len (Sacramento Kings) and Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk (Toronto Raptors) have already expressed their statements regarding the disastrous event.

Len was born in Antratsyt of Ukraine, while Mykhailiuk grew up in Cherkasy. The two Ukrainian players are currently playing for the National Basketball Association (NBA). Len was drafted back in 2013, while Mykhailiuk was drafted in 2018.

In a game between the Sacramento Kings and the Denver Nuggets, both teams paused for a moment of silence and held each other’s arms to condemn the crisis.

The two Ukrainian professional basketball players are optimistic that this emerging war would end peacefully.

On the other hand, the Klitschko brothers, Vitali and Wladimir, plans to join the Ukrainian military. They vowed to fight for their country, whatever it takes.

Two former boxing legends, Vitali Klitschko and Wladimir Klitschko have already stated that they are willing to be part of a “bloody war” between Ukraine and Russia.

Vitali is also the current mayor of Ukraine’s capital city, Kyiv. He stated that he and his brother would take up arms and would love to defend their country against this threat.

“I believe in Ukraine, I believe in my country and I believe in my people,” Vitali Klitschko said during an interview

The Klitschko brothers are both boxing Hall of Famers. They were also both former heavyweight champions during their fighting years.
