Review – Ubisoft’s Roller Champions

Roller Champions Review

Roller Champions is a free-to-play, skill-based, multiplayer sports game that got launched today. The game is said to be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S|X, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC starting May 25. We had the pleasure of testing out this game early on PC so here’s our review for Ubisoft’s Roller Champions.

Let me start by saying that this game is a very good attempt at trying to make something for both Casual and eSports Gamers. If you’re familiar with Rocket League then you might find this game to follow a similar concept. However, Ubisoft has made a lot of unique changes that make this game very fun to play.

Initial Impressions

  • Right when the game starts for the first time, players have the option to customize their character. While the customization options may not be very deep, it is decent enough for most people. There’s also the option to take a free look at the character.
  • Once character customization is complete, the game directly starts the tutorial which takes about 10-15 minutes to complete. The tutorial is very basic and does a good job of teaching the controls and showcasing the gameplay.
  • The game natively supports input from both Keyboard and Mouse and even Controllers. I was personally playing the game using an Xbox One Controller and had an excellent experience overall.

Gameplay and Game Modes

Starting with the gameplay, it is very easy to play and also feels smooth to play. This game focuses more on 3v3 Player gameplay. While you can play completely solo 1v3, the game heavily focuses on teaming up and playing together. If you end up supporting each of your teammates then you have a higher chance of winning.

Just like in a normal game of football, players need to pass the ball between all three of their teammates regularly. To even take a chance of making a goal, filling the lap gauge is required. This can be done by traveling the entire arena a few times. Until the lap gauge isn’t filled, the net to make the goal won’t open. Players can also get help by using boosts to be faster than their teammates.

There are a total of 5 game modes, out of which some are permanent and a few are time-limited. The permanent modes include a 3v3 Quick Match, along with that, there are also the Ranked Matches. There’s even a Skatepark for players to practice and a Custom Game mode. As of writing, there’s a time-limited mode that could be removed in the future.

We got to try out the Custom Game mode in our testing and found it to be very well made. If a team has a player and two missings, then there was also the option to add an AI which made the 3v3 experience even better. Along with that one player could also be added as a spectator which would be very helpful in tournaments.

Roller Pass

Just like most of the other free-to-play games, Roller Champions also has a battle pass equivalent. This game calls the battle pass a “Roller Pass” which provides players with additional content. It allows players to gain different customization options for their characters.

The Roller Passes are for around 4 weeks each and there are 30 tiers and a total of 42 rewards. It has been confirmed that all of the gear included in the pass is exclusive to it and cannot be obtained in the item shop. Ubisoft has also confirmed that all items in Roller Champions are purely cosmetic and do not give any advantages or disadvantages to players.

PC Performance

As of now, the PC Port seems to be optimized pretty well. While the initial beta we got to try – did have a few issues with the game not even starting, all of that seems to now be fixed. We also faced a few minor shutters during the tutorial area, but they all seem to have been fixed during the online matches. Other than that, there were no major issues we found in our testing.

We tested the game on the ASUS Vivobook 14 with the Ryzen 3 3250U, Vega 3 Integrated Graphics, and 8GB of RAM. We were very surprised to see how well the game performed even on such low-end hardware. The “minimum” requirements officially released by the Dev Team suggest at least an Intel i5-4460, with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 4GB card. Something that was even more surprising was that the requirements listed 16GB of RAM as the minimum.

Verdict

In the end, all I wanna say is that Roller Champions is a good free-to-play title. You can have a lot of fun playing the game with all the modes added to the game. The Battle Pass can be bought separately too and has a lot of good things to offer. Ubisoft has already confirmed that the Battle Pass will only add cosmetics to the game and there are no pay-to-win mechanics added.

If you don’t like playing solo then you can also have a lot of fun by adding your friends. The game supports cross-play which is a big plus point. This means Console and PC players would be able to game together. While the soundtracks may not be very impressive and comparable to a lot of other games, they sure do a good job at adding some pump to the overall gameplay.
