The Twisted Metal TV show just wrapped up production for its first season. The development progress has been fast ever since PlayStation took the reigns on the adaptation. Helming the show will be Paul Wernick (Deadpool) and Michael Jonathan Smith (Cobra Kai). Everyone on board wants to stay true to the style of the game and its characters.
The Story
The show stars Anthony Mackie (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) as an amnesiac who wakes up in a post-apocalyptic world. He is an outsider who must navigate the wasteland and deliver a mysterious package.

Fans have wondered about the storyline since the Twisted Metal series isn’t known for a single direction. Instead, it focuses on the story of each rider and what they do once they win the deadly battle royale. The creators hope to add more depth to the world and its characters starting with the first season. They hope it gains enough success to warrant successive seasons, leading to a big pay-off.
According to them, the battle royale will happen at a later season when they establish most of the characters. All we know is that one of the confirmed characters will be the iconic clown, Sweet Tooth. Professional wrestler Samoa Joe will be in the role, though the voice will be Will Arnett. We’ll likely see more details about the other characters once they release a trailer.
The Theme
Post-apocalyptic settings are often dark and grim. However, if there’s any inspiration for Twisted Metal, the creators wanted it to feel closer to Zombieland. Zombieland was a lighter take on the post-apocalypse, where characters did their best to adapt to their situation. However, it doesn’t mean there won’t be stakes or emotional moments for the characters.
People believe it will have a similar presentation as Mad Max being the closest movie to Twisted Metal. Showrunners will also look at how the franchise established itself over time.
All in all, fans are hopeful because everyone behind the series is a fan of the games. They love the characters and have fond memories of the game they hope to translate to the screen.
More Video Game Adaptations Incoming
Twisted Metal is only one of the projects PlayStation helms after their foray into television and films. One of the distinct differences in how they manage their projects is that they have people who love the games working on them. One project close to release is the live-action adaptation of The Last of Us, a series starring Pedro Pascal. It will tell the same story as the Game of the Year hit, and they even have the original game director on board as a part of the production.
Another project in the works will be a film based on The Ghost of Tsushima. Chad Stahelski (John Wick) will be leading its development.
