- Jones was born into a family of turkey farmers. He grew up in Texas, where he worked as an usher at a theater. He also wrote articles for his school newspaper T. Collins Jones, Esquire. After completing his education at the University of Texas, he was drafted into the counterintelligence unit during the Korean War.

- Later in 1959, when Jones and his friend and collaborator Harvey Schmidt were aiming for a Broadway-level production of the musical, they received news that a friend was looking for a one-act musical for a summer festival at Barnard College.

- Although the initial response to the modest musical was mixed, producer Lore Noto offered to bring it to the Sullivan Street Playhouse in Greenwich Village. After opening in May 1960, the play continued to run for 17,000 performances before it became the longest-running play in 2002.
