A recent TikTok video by Jen Smit featuring a bear seemingly dancing with a pole has captured the internet’s attention. However, the bear isn’t showing off its moves; it’s simply scratching an itch.
Why do bears use poles?
- Bears get itchy just like us, whether it’s pesky bugs, dry skin, or shedding fur. A good ol’ rub against a sturdy pole is the perfect solution – instant itch relief! It also helps with grooming, getting rid of all that loose fur and dirt clinging to their coats.
- Bears have scent glands on their backs and paws. So, when they rub against stuff, they’re basically leaving their personal calling card – a special message for other bears in the area. It’s their way of saying, “Hey, this is my turf!”
- Ever seen your cat contort itself against the furniture? Yeah, bears do the same thing with poles. It’s all about stretching those muscles and unwinding after a long nap or a lazy day of foraging for berries.
- For younger bears, scratching on poles is like playing in the jungle gym. It’s a way to explore their environment, test their strength, and maybe even have a little fun.
“Dancing” Bear
The TikTok clip blew up because it showed this natural behaviour in a whole new light. The bear’s rhythmic movements had everyone thinking it was busting a move, which is pretty funny, don’t get me wrong. But even though the bear wasn’t exactly throwing down a dance routine, the video totally highlights how much we love watching animals do their thing. Plus, it shows how easily we can find amusement in everyday stuff.

But while the dancing bear video might be a laugh riot, remember: bears are wild animals. It’s best to admire them from a safe distance, not try to join their pole-scratching party. If you ever encounter a bear in the wild, follow safety guidelines from wildlife experts – your life might depend on it!
