A new trailer is out for Disney’s live-action adaptation of the classic The Little Mermaid and it shows a lot of promise for fans of the genre. Here’s a complete breakdown of The Little Mermaid (2023) trailer and what we know so far about the movie including cast, crew and release date. Read to find out.
New trailer breakdown
The new trailer for The Little Mermaid confirms that the plot of the live-action adaptation will not differ from that of the original 1989 animated film. We see the mermaid Ariel (Halle Bailey) falling in love with a human prince who lives above the water, and she has to fight off the villain Ursula.
Compared to the previous teaser, the new 30-second promotional video offers a closer look at Ariel’s life in the ocean. She swims around playfully with a sense of longing that she wants to be part of a different world.

We finally get our first look at two main characters in the film – Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King) and Ursula (Melissa McCarthy). Even in a blink-and-miss glimpse, Jonah Hauer-King looks convincing as Ariel’s love interest. Melissa McCarthy’s evil laugh in the end is truly nefarious.
The cast of Little Mermaid
The casting of Halle Bailey, a Black actress, as Ariel in the upcoming 2023 live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid has caused controversy and backlash from some fans who argue that the character should be depicted as a white, redheaded mermaid.

Other casting choices that have really got fans positively buzzing are Awkwafina as Scuttle, the wacky seagull who tries to explain human artifacts to Ariel, and Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, the Jamaican crab who serves as King Triton’s advisor and Ariel’s confidant.
Apart from the mentioned actors, the cast includes Jacob Tremblay, Art Malik, Noma Dumezweni and Academy Award winner Javier Bardem.
