After a successful first season, many are now looking forward to seeing The Last of Us Season 2. The second season is expected to be faithful to its source material, with the showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin confirming it will introduce a new character, Abby, from the game’s second installment. As this excites fans, it also leaves them wondering who will play this role, with some claiming it could be Florence Pugh.
Who Will Play Abby’s Role in The Last of Us Season 2?
Rumors have it that the HBO series has already cast the actress who will play the role of Abby. It was said to be “the first order of business they got done,” Forbes noted.
To add more fuel to the fire, Twitter user MyTimeToShineHello, a known industry leaker, revealed the said character was offered to Pugh even before the writers’ strike began. However, the user also claimed that Shannon Berry could play the role. As this leaves fans confused, let’s consider whether either could portray Abby in The Last of Us Season 2.

Will Abby’s Role Go to Florence Pugh?
It can’t be denied that Pugh is one of the most sought-after actresses today. She recently appeared in the 2023 blockbuster Oppenheimer, opposite Cillian Murphy, and Don’t Worry Darling with Harry Styles. And with the show’s 24 Emmy nominations, not to mention a solid fan base, it’s no surprise that Abby’s role could go to an A-list actress like her.
However, there may be one catch. In The Last of Us 2 video game, Abby has a muscular and toned physique, thanks to her extensive training as a Fireflies member. So, how will Pugh channel this physicality?
Surely, it will be no biggie for the 27-year-old star. She has already played the role of Yelena Belova in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, particularly in the 2021 Black Widow. As a Red Room operative, Pugh is no stranger to playing action-packed scenes, and she can probably do the same in The Last of Us Season 2.

Is The Last of Us Season 2 Already in Production?
With the ongoing writers’ strike, it may take a long while before The Last of Us Season 2 starts production. But thankfully, Mazin revealed that the second season had seen significant progress even before the strikes began.
“We were able to map out all of season 2,” he told Entertainment Weekly’s The Awardist podcast, organized through his PR team following the WGA guidelines.
He also claimed that he had already written and submitted the first episode’s script and sent it to HBO around 10:30 or 10:40 PM before the strike began at midnight. Mazin was glad he could keep some of the series’ “below-the-line crew members,” working off the second season outline and first episode script. These people remain employed amid the strikes.
“To the extent that we can keep anybody below the line working, that’s fantastic,” he continued. But they can’t start filming The Last of Us Season 2 yet, even though they are already reeling to start. “We are all raring to go,” he added.
By the looks of it, it will take time before fans again see Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey reprise their roles as Joel and Ellie in The Last of Us Season 2. It also means that the actress who will play Abby’s role will only be revealed if the writers’ strikes officially end.
