The NBA has been accustomed to three all-stars teaming up in the same team to form a super team. While it is highly normal nowadays, players used to battle it out to get to the top. Here’s our list of the best NBA Big 3s and their resume.
#6. Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and James Harden (Oklahoma City Thunder)
Though we really never get to see the full potential is this team-up, we saw what each of these players was capable of. All three of these guys won MVP thereafter. Kevin Durant won MVP in 2013, Russ won it in 2017, and James Harden took it home in 2018.
During the 2012 season, the OKC Thunder made a huge playoff success – reaching the NBA finals. At their young age, they were able to achieve a feat even some of the greatest NBA players never had. Unfortunately, they were up against the Miami big 3 of James, Wade, and Bosh. Although they were swept in that series, we could already see great potential between these three players.
#5. LeBron James, Kyrie Irving, and Kevin Love
Right after LeBron left Miami and returned to Cleveland for another shot, another super team was formed – him, Kyrie, and Love. James was on his usual GOAT status, and Kyrie was already a rising superstar, Kevin Love was also another great addition.
During their time together, they became rivals with the dominant Golden State Warriors. It was the most sought battle, between two of the best teams in the NBA during that time. Even though they only managed to win 1 championship in 4 outings, it was a feat no team has ever done before – come back from a 3-1 deficit (during the 2016 finals).
#4. Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen (Boston Celtics)
Before the 2007-2008 season, the Timberwolves traded “The Big Ticket”, Kevin Garnett, to the Boston Celtics. Along with the addition of Ray Allen, the Celtics now has a very talented big three in Garnett, Pierce, and Allen.
A versatile power forward who can do it all (Garnett), together with one of the league’s most prolific scorers (Pierce), added with one of the greatest shooters of all time (Allen), this team was almost unstoppable in the East. Though they stayed together for five years, they only manage to nab a championship from a Prime Kobe in 2008.
#3. LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh (Miami Heat)
The trio of James, Wade, and Chris Bosh were very controversial. This was when LeBron made “The Decision”. In their time together (4 years), they managed to win 2 out of 4 NBA Finals.
The team was electrifying and extremely fun to watch. They were loved, but they were also hated. It was a very phenomenal team, as they created a team to beat during the years they stayed together. The team then broke up after LeBron returned to Cleveland.
#2. Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker (San Antonio Spurs)
This trio is probably the longest-tenured big three in the modern era. Consistently being a dominant team in the western conference from 2002 up until 2016. The Spurs made a record of 22 consecutive playoff appearances, which includes the time the big 3 played.
Arguably the best power forward to play in the game, Tim Duncan, was a force in the paint while also being a threat on the perimeter with his jumpers. His skill was unmatched, and at times was considered the best in the NBA, winning two (2) NBA MVP Awards and three (3) Finals MVPs. Together with two of the best non-American players in Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili, plus an organized system by their head coach, Gregg Popovich, this team was feared by most.
#1. Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Kevin Durant (Golden State Warriors)
This isn’t even a debate. Not even a question. This team was probably the best to be ever assembled. The greatest shooter of all time, Steph Curry, paired with another great shooter and defensive player, Klay Thompson, and one of the NBA’s greatest players, Kevin Durant.
No team was going to beat this squad. They even probably had a comparison to the 1996 Chicago Bulls super team (Jordan, Pippen, and Rodman). They were in three consecutive finals, taking the first two against LeBron James and the Cavaliers while losing the third one to Kawhi Leonard and the Raptors.
Among the teams listed here, this team is probably the most unstoppable, both defensively and offensively. The only thing that stopped them from dominating was the injuries they suffered during the 2019 playoffs.
