The world has been led astray by an array of wildly convoluting and yet simple-in-nature Isekai Anime. Such an influx has caused nothing but the greatest dopamine rush. So much so that most anime fans may be suffering from a good tinge of Dopamine overdose. With that set, will the ‘The Apothecary Diaries Anime’ live up to its source material? The Apothecary Diaries Anime Announced
- On Thursday, TOHO animation declared that they, alongside OLM, will produce an anime version of the light novel series called The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto) by Natsu Hyūga and Touko Shino. The show will air this year, although TOHO has not confirmed the release dates yet.

- The show will reportedly be aired in two segments or cours. Likely to be 12 episodes each.
The Apothecary Diaries, written by Natsu Hyuga, is a series currently in a publication by Shufunotomo. It comprises 12 volumes, with over 21 million copies circulating.
Itsuki Nanao produced a manga adaptation in May 2017, which is now published by Square Enix with 10 volumes currently available. J-Novel Club has published The Apothecary Diaries in English as well.
The Apothecary Diaries is a sweet departure from your average dose of the Isekai genre. Diving into the story lies beautiful storytelling. Underlying such storytelling is of course royal politics and a cast of complex yet intriguing characters.
The main character Maomao is an especially noticeable one. With her unwarrantedly gifted intelligence, she’s a character to behold and beloved of many fans. She is to be voiced by Aoi Yūki.
What is The Apothecary Diaries Anime going to be about?
The plot of The Apothecary Diaries is as follows.
- There is a land in the East governed by an emperor, and the emperor’s consorts and attendants reside in a vast complex called the hougong or the rear palace.
- Maomao is a modest girl who grew up in an unassuming town under the care of her apothecary father. She never anticipated that the rear palace would have any connection to her life, until she was abducted and sold into servitude there.
- Despite her unremarkable appearance, Maomao possesses a sharp mind, quick wit, and a vast knowledge of medicine. These are her secrets until she encounters the head eunuch, Jinshi, who is equally perceptive as she is.
- Jinshi can see through Maomao’s disguise and appoints her as a lady-in-waiting to the Emperor’s favorite consort, so she can taste the lady’s food for poison.
By the consort’s side, Maomao discovers the inner workings of the rear palace, some of which are unseemly. She wonders if she can ever live a peaceful life or if her insatiable curiosity and deductive abilities will lead her to more dangerous and thrilling experiences.
