That time when Redfall could have been in PS5

Although Redfall is PC and Xbox Series X/S exclusive, this wasn’t always the case. Arkane Studios’ creative director Harvey Smith has revealed that a Redfall PS5 version was also in development. In an interview with IGN, he stated that after purchasing Bethesda, Microsoft scrapped the Redfall port for Sony’s next-gen platform.

“We were acquired by Microsoft and it was a change with capital C. They came in and said, ‘No PlayStation 5, we’re focusing on Xbox, PC, and Game Pass.”

Microsoft acquired Bethesda

In September 2020, Microsoft publicly revealed that they will be purchasing Bethesda. The acquisition cost Microsoft $7.5 billion and nearly doubled the number of its development studios to 23. It also greatly boosted the number of licenses owned by Microsoft’s Xbox division.

While Harvey Smith acknowledges that the cancellation of the PS5 version is disappointing to fans, he does not see it as a total loss for Redfall.

“It’s not very serious, it’s even a good decision I think. [It helps to] support Game Pass and have one less platform to worry about, one less complexity.”

 Microsoft Acquires Bethesda

In September 2020, Microsoft announced its acquisition of ZeniMax Media, the parent company of Bethesda Softworks, for a whopping $7.5 billion. This move was a huge deal in the gaming industry, as it meant that Microsoft would gain ownership of Bethesda’s popular franchises such as The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and Doom, among others.

  • The acquisition also meant that future Bethesda games, such as the highly anticipated Starfield and The Elder Scrolls VI, would be exclusive to Xbox and PC, with potential exceptions made for existing contractual obligations.
  • This acquisition is part of Microsoft’s larger strategy to strengthen its position in the gaming market by bolstering its first-party studios.
  • With the addition of Bethesda, Microsoft now has 23 studios under its belt, each with unique and talented developers working on a wide range of games.

Bethesda’s Most Notable Games

  • The Elder Scrolls series (including Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim)
  • Fallout series (including Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 4, Fallout 76)
