Stranger Things Anime reports leaked + Will it be an original story?

The aroma of Stranger Things Spin-Off rumors is such that almost everyone you meet across the neighborhood has heard of it. This isn’t as much as Netflix as it is pop culture phenomena, although it is the former as well. But in what now appears to be Japan trying to capitalize on a well-established franchise, a Stranger Things Anime is reportedly in the works.

Stranger Things has teased multiple spin-off project developments. With how series usually turn out, spin-offs become a more profitable reality. Imagine The Walking Dead, which now has multiple spin-offs in work. (One including Maggie and Negan even). Apparently, this series should be called Stranger Things Tokyo.

The rumor comes from the fan site What’s on Netflix. The reports state that the project has been in the works for more than a year.

A comparison with Money Heist Korea: Joint Economic Area

  1. To give you better hindsight, imagine Money Heist Korea: Joint Economic Area. The series is based on the Spanish Money Heist. Fans expected it to be a spin-off, something that is inspired by the original Money Heist but not exactly the story in its entirety.
  2. But as the fans found out, the Korean rendition of Money Heist is actually a remake. The thing with remakes is that they usually fall out of the line. Mainly because they aren’t able to imitate the original dimensions of their source.

But what about an animated remake? Well, duh. Now imagine again – The Boys Presents: Diabolical. Which is an animated spin-off of sorts that is based on The Boys universe. We expect something similar for Stranger Things Tokyo.

Differentiating between a spin-off and a remake: Which one is Stranger Things anime?

The baseline problem here is two.

  1. Firstly, because it is a spin-off it ought to not be a remake. Money Heist Korea is a remake and not a spin-off. But Stranger Things Tokyo and Money Heist Korea both have similarities in their titles. They are Asian series contention based on events that fictionally happen in western countries. To make an original story named Money Heist Korea would have been complex but not impossible.
  2. Secondly, Stranger Things Tokyo will be an Anime. As such, the questions are pressing whether it will be a spin-off or a remake. Here’s what the creators had to say previously when asked about the possibilities of a Stranger Things spin-off

What Matt Duffer had to say about a possible Stranger Things spin-off back in early 2022

On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Matt Duffer said the spin-off would be “1,000% different”. He also mentioned that the “story that connects to the Stranger Things world, but it really is more about how we’re telling that story.”

Now there’s no official confirmation yet that what the Duffer brothers were talking about is this spin-off exactly. Stranger Things Anime could just easily be a remake instead of an original story. And what Matt said about the spin-off could be some other non-anime spin-off.

But given the leaks, it feels likely that as Stranger Things Anime will be the first Stranger Things Spin-off, we expect the story to be original. How do you think the Stranger Things Anime will turn out to be?
