Star Wars Confirms New Thrawn Comic Book Will Feature Anakin Skywalker
During the Lucasfilm Publishing panel at NYCC, it was announced that the 2018 novel Thrawn: Alliances will receive a comic adaptation in January 2024. The original author, Timothy Zahn, will team up with Jody Houser, who previously adapted Zahn’s Thrawn novel into a comic within the Star Wars canon.
Set against the backdrop of the Clone Wars and the Dark Times of the Empire, Thrawn: Alliances unveils Thrawn’s first encounter with Anakin Skywalker. Additionally, the novel explores Thrawn’s first mission alongside Darth Vader after Thrawn ascended to the rank of Grand Admiral in the Imperial Navy. The upcoming adaptation promises a fresh visual of the encounters between the characters, and as a preview, Star Wars released the comic book cover as illustrated by Rod Reis.

What Happened to Anakin Skywalker and Grand Admiral Thrawn in Thrawn: Alliances?
Towards the end of the Clone Wars, Anakin Skywalker and Thrawn crossed paths on the planet Batuu. Thrawn had journeyed from the Unknown Regions to the known galaxy, searching for allies and new technology for his people, the Chiss. During his quest, he encountered Anakin, who was on a mission to rescue his wife, Padmé Amidala, with whom the Republic had lost contact. Thrawn and Anakin worked together briefly, sharing insights into the ongoing conflict before parting ways, having developed a profound mutual respect.
Years later, during the rule of the Empire, Thrawn returned to the spotlight. His remarkable abilities and intellect earned him Emperor Palpatine’s favor and a high-ranking position within the Imperial Navy. He was assigned a mission, and to his surprise, his partner was none other than Darth Vader. The mission led them back to Batuu. It didn’t take Thrawn long to deduce that the Sith Lord was once the man he had encountered during the Clone Wars. This mirroring of adventures between Anakin and Darth Vader promises to be a compelling aspect of the upcoming adaptation.
