Sony PlayStation 5 Jailbreak; Why you should NOT do it!

Sony PlayStation 5 Jailbreak Why you should NOT do it - Cover Picture

After nearly two years of its release, someone has finally figured out how to jailbreak a Sony PlayStation 5. This isn’t a new occurrence with devices like smartphones and consoles. However, as tempting as it sounds, you should NOT jailbreak a Sony PlayStation 5. Even though some users would promote this method of hacking into the system of Sony’s latest consoles, you should consider plenty of factors before giving in. Keep reading to find out more about why you should not jailbreak your Sony PlayStation 5.

A modder took to Twitter to share an experimental IPV6 kernel exploit for the console. This all happened last week and even though it’s a significant step into hacking a PS5 console, there are still risks to this. Although its stability is at 80-90%, there’s a chance you won’t be able to update your firmware if Sony releases new versions.

What happens if I jailbreak my console?

Jailbreaking a device gives you complete access to debug menus and even use programs or software that couldn’t be used on the device before it was jailbroken. If you do decide to jailbreak your Sony PlayStation 5, you can actually do a lot of things a regular player can’t. Of course, these will only be possible if the hack is made more stable:

  • A jailbroken PS5 can be completely customized with the use of mods, including the overall user interface
  • You can apply mods in games
  • Play almost any game for free

Check out this video shared by Lance McDonald, another modder who was able to use the jailbreaking method from SpecterDev:

The jailbreak allowed McDonald to install a PS4 PKG file on their PS5 and he immediately installed P.T., the Silent Hill demo that was never released to the public. Although he did manage to install it, he wasn’t able to launch and play the demo. For now, McDonald says that he needs “to work out how to destroy the blacklist/whitelist for PS4 games.”

Why it’s a bad idea to jailbreak your Sony PlayStation 5

As we’ve been saying all throughout this article, you should not jailbreak your PlayStation 5. There are a lot of risks to this and considering how difficult it is to get your hands on a PS5 nowadays, you shouldn’t even consider hacking into your console. Here are some of the most common things that will happen if you do jailbreak your Sony PlayStation 5:

  • You immediately void your warranty for the device
  • Nowadays, most games feature an online mode. If you like playing with your friends or other players online, you’ll lose the ability to do that on a jailbroken device
  • Your PSN account can get banned if Sony catches you doing this exploit
  • It’s also not a good idea to get your PS5 jailbroken especially since Sony will most likely release more firmware updates for the console
  • The current hack doesn’t allow you to install homebrew or custom apps so there’s really no use aside from accessing the debug menu

For now, it’s a good idea to put off the thought of getting your PS5 jailbroken. We should also consider the fact that the current jailbreak method is not stable. Your console will be rendered useless if you hop on the trend and hack into your console.
