There are dozens of DLC kits available for the Sims 4, which can become expensive. Free content is always welcome, and the Desert Luxe kit will be downloadable until October 18, 8 AM PT. The release is part of a celebration of the base game going free to play.
The kit includes multiple indoor and outdoor furniture inspired by Southwestern desert living. Here’s how you can redeem it:
Steam
Sign in to your Steam account and type in the search bar, Desert Luxe. It should lead you to the Sims 4 expansion page, where you can click the get and download button. Once you’ve claimed it, you can download the DLC using the platform.
If you’re having trouble finding it, search for the Sims 4 page first. Afterward, look for Desert Luxe in the expansion list in the product description. You’ll find that the price as free or 0. Click on the page and download it there.
Origin
You can also claim the Desert Luxe kit on Origin. Log in to your account and select the Browse Games menu. Look for The Sims, and head to the Game Packs and Stuff Packs section. You’ll find The Sims 4 Desert Luxe Kit as one of the first selections on that page. Click Buy Now, and you should get a price of $0.00.
Click Pay Now. It will not charge you anything. Open your Sims 4 game through Origin and update the main game once the option is available.
When no update appears, click the More button. Go to Kits and find Desert Luxe before selecting Download New Kit.
EA App
When using the EA App to download the free DLC, sign in first and look for the Sims 4 base game under your Installed Games menu. Scroll down, and you should see a Kits section where you can select The Sims 4 Desert Luxe Kit. You’ll have the option to download it for free if it’s not yet part of your library.
Following the end of the event, The Sims 4 base game will be accessible across consoles, PC, and Mac. Going free will make the game more accessible while the developers create optional paid content. Sims 4 is one of the more controversial games to implement the paid content model.

While many in the gaming community dislike the prices they use to charge for content, it is a model that EA implemented for many years. The Sims 2 used expansions to add content to the game, dating back to The Sims 2 when digital downloads were not yet possible. Back then, people had to buy CDs of the expansions, which had high prices like you see today.
Development for Sims 4 shows no sign of stopping any time soon. There is also no indication that EA plans to create Sims 5, as the current Maxis studio has focused on developing Sims 4.
