Russell Westbrook and the Los Angeles Lakers continue to struggle this season. They are currently 9th in the West (28-35) and will probably be in the play-in tournament for the playoffs.
Rumors have been spreading across the league that Russ and the Lakers “have mutual interest” in parting ways this offseason.
There have been reports of him and Vogel having tense moments in deciding his role with the roster. The team also looks to be indifferent towards Westbrook, especially LeBron.
With his time with the Purple and Gold, Russ is averaging 18.1 points, 7.2 assists, and 7.6 rebounds a night. Though these numbers are pretty good for a starting point guard, he’s been absolutely inefficient on the floor. He is shooting 43.4% from the field and 28.4% from behind the arc. Additionally, he’s been careless with the ball with 4.1 turnovers per game, the fifth-most in the league.

Recently, there was a strong push inside the Lakers for Westbrook to come off the bench.
Executives, coaching staff, and the players seemed to not like what Russ is bringing on the floor every night. There were also previous games where he was benched during the 4th quarter, as he was deemed “to have struggled in crunch time”. But, Frank Vogel has since declined to bench Russell Westbrook and will continue to let him start until the end of the season.
- The Lakers signing Russ seemed like a huge mistake since they had a choice of signing DeMar DeRozan, Kyle Lowry, or Buddy Hield instead of him. Now, to be fair, the failed project and Lakers’ struggling season isn’t necessarily Westbrook’s fault.
- The fans are torching this guy for not playing well, but we can clearly see that Russ always plays very hard. He goes out there every night and tries to put his best foot forward, playing with heart and passion. Though he’s declining and has been a disappointment, it’s unfair to put the pressure and blame on Russ.
With a lot of tension and drama inside the organization, Russell Westbrook’s time with the Lakers might come to an end in no time.
There were reports of the Houston Rockets being a strong pursuer for Westbrook. Will we see him once again with the Rockets in the future?
