From the former Philippine president to the current one, Rodrigo Duterte accused President Bongbong Marcos of being an ‘addict’ during a prayer rally at Davao City and that he could also face what his father, Marcos Sr, went through during his tenure. Here’s what you missed out on during Duterte’s speech and whether the current president responded to the heavy accusations.
What Did Rodrigo Duterte Say Against Pres Marcos Jr?
On January 28, Duterte spoke at the organized protest rally held in Davao City, which coincided with President Bongbong Marcos Jr’s Bagong Pilipinas kickoff rally at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila.

- The former president threw cusses and accused Marcos Jr of being a drug addict, saying that he saw the current president’s name in the list of drug personalities of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA).
“Nung ako mayor, pinakitaan ako ng evidence ng PDEA. Doon sa listahan, nandoon ‘yung pangalan mo,” Rodrigo Duterte blurted out in his speech. [When I was mayor, PDEA showed me a piece of evidence. In the list, your name (Marcos Jr) was there.] He also brought up the possibility that PBBM might end up being ousted like his father, Marcos Sr.

As the Marcos administration pushed for charter change, the protest rally was to show Davao’s ‘opposition’ to the administration’s plan. The former leader also alleged that the motive behind the cha-cha was the administration’s want for power. As he continued his speech, Duterte consecutively called Marcos Jr “bangag”.
“Bongbong, bangag ‘yan. That’s why sinasabi ko sa inyo. Si Bongbong Marcos bangag noon. Ngayong presidente na, bangag ang ating presidente,” he shared. [Bongbong, he is high. That’s what I’m saying to all of you. Bongbong Marcos was high then. Now that he’s president, he is still high.]
- As per the drug addict allegations, PDEA debunked Duterte’s claims of Bongbong Marcos Jr in a statement via the Philippine Information Agency, saying that the current president is “not in its watch list.”
“From its inception in 2002 and up to the present, President Ferdinand R Marcos, Jr was NEVER in our NDIS (National Drug Information System),” PDEA stated. An official statement from the Malacañang has yet to be shared, but as of now, PDEA’s statement seems to be enough to debunk the accusation from the ex-leader.

- Meanwhile, netizens shared their thoughts about the same-day events of the two known names in politics, the Marcoses and Dutertes. Here are some that we found on X.
Do not be misled. The Bagong Pilipinas rally in Luneta and the Davao 'rally against charter change' do not aim to uplift our lives. It's just a show of force among the squabbling Marcos-Romualdez and Duterte-Arroyo factions. Both factions are detrimental to our national interest.
