PlayStation Consoles Could Witness Increase In Prices Amidst US-China Trade War, Warns Sony

Amidst the ongoing trade war between the US and China, Sony has warned that if the situation fails to stabilize then the pricing of their consoles will be affected. Considering that this comes in a time when the PS5 is nearing its launch, it makes the news worse for the consumers.

As Wall Street Journal reports, the increase in the tariffs on Chinese-made videogame machines laid down by the Trump administration will hurt consumers. This move would lead to an increase in prices of the consoles manufactured by Sony. Speaking further on the situation, Sony finance chief Hiroki Totoki adds, “We believe, and therefore have told the U.S. government, that higher tariffs would ultimately damage the U.S. economy.” While Sony hasn’t decided how it’ll try to mediate the increase in tariffs, Totoki says that Sony will be considering an option to make consumers bear half of the burden.

Speaking about their upcoming console, the PlayStation 5, Totoki makes it clear that the new console will cost higher because of the use of new technologies irrespective of the fact whether tariffs come into play or not. This comes amidst rumors that the PS5 will be costing a whopping 1000$ at launch. The Swedish retailer MediaMarkt has listed the product for preorder on its website. This might just be a placeholder, but considering the specifications that have been slated for the PS5, it might as well be true.
