Mousou Telepathy tries to do a lot of things together like a superpower, the high school cliche, ecchi elements, and a generic romance between teens.

‘How good it is’ is a question that can be left up to individual taste. But here’s everything that makes Mousou Telepathy a generic rom-com and how the perverted twist blends into the story.

Nakano is a high school girl who can read the minds of others. Because of this ability, she has been exposed to unpleasant thoughts that are aimed at her. This exposure to the perception of others has led to her becoming a loner and a people pleaser. She lives her life by listening to these thoughts and staying in the background as much as possible.

Until she finds out that the most popular boy Toda has a huge crush on her. But his feelings are perverted and his thoughts are mostly him having erotic fantasies about his classmate Nakano. The webcomic explores the relationship between Nakano and Toda.

Everything that makes Mousou Telepathy a generic rom-com

  • Set up in a high school, Mousou Telepathy ticks off the first requirement for a generic rom-com. The high school set-up is a convenient setup for romantic stories as the frequency with which the characters meet leads to convenient pacing and natural developments between them.
  • The opposites characters falling in love or being interested in one another. Nakano and Toda are very different from each other. Toda is popular and well-liked, whereas Nakano is socially awkward and timid. This is a recurring theme in many romantic comedies.
  • The character development is very sweet, wholesome, and fitting for any rom-com anime or manga. The webcomic gives all the characters a fair chance to grow and develop, as seen with Mana. She goes from a mean girl to a reliable friend.

The perverted twist

Mousou Telepathy doesn’t try to hide or present its ecchi themes differently from what they are. The perverse elements are presented to the readers right away. Nakano is exposed to Toda’s perverted thoughts and fantasies.

This twist makes the romantic development between them more complex. But she also gets to hear him think about genuine things like wanting to get to know her.

She thinks to herself in the beginning that if she wasn’t aware of his true nature, she would have come to like him. During the initial stages of the story, a reader might feel that Toda’s thoughts are the central focus but Mousou Telepathy often strays from it to give us time with the main characters beyond this running gag.

The story is also short and for the most part, the pacing is consistent. If not for the dragged parts, Mousou Telepathy has done a considerably good job blending in the romance and the ecchi parts.

Conclusion

Mousou Telepathy is a generic rom-com with all the wholesome and cute moments. The perverted twist is a creative addition to the story and sets it apart from the other titles falling under the rom-com genre.
