The story defines some games, while in others it is dependent on the player and their actions. These stories have also come to inspire actors, directors, and producers to create movies and series based on them.
Here, I have listed 10 movies based on games that are great. One must remember, movies also contain their own aspects of the story to make them more engaging for their audience. So, they might not stay entirely loyal to the game’s storyline.
Pixels
When video cassettes of arcade video game recordings are sent to space in a capsule, some aliens find it and think that it is a declaration of war. They send a challenge to the humans, failing which they will conquer Earth. These challenges are in the form of the arcade games themselves, particularly Pac-Man. This movie is a slightly different Adam Sandler classic, with humor and aliens pixelating the Earth. As a Pac-Man fan, this movie was a fun and easy watch.

Pokemon Detective Pikachu
In this movie, we see the cute Electric-type Pokemon Pikachu come to life. With loads of humorous moments and evil plans brewing under everybody’s noses, the movie is the right balance between humor, adventure, and a family movie. Also, we get to see some good visuals of our favorite Pokemon and some legendary ones like Mewtwo.

Warcraft
Based on the Warcraft video game series, this is an action fantasy movie. We see different races fighting for their own survival, some for power, some for their people, most for themselves. The movie follows protagonists on both sides of the war between humans and orcs. The few who can actually see the bug picture must unite and take it upon themselves to save everyone, human and orc alike.

Sonic the Hedgehog
This is the most recent movie on this list. We see Sonic trying to live unseen on Earth after he is transported here. But, when you think about it, being in a new world and having a super, super fast set of legs, it is hard to stay quiet all the time. Sonic attracts the attention of Doctor Eggman and has to survive the crazy Doctor’s attempts to capture him.

Resident Evil series
The series ran from 2002 to 2016 and a total of six installments. Milla Jovovich portrayed the protagonist Alicia “Alice” Marcus across the six movies. The entire series has been marked as average but is still a good watch if you are a fan of Resident Evil. Recently, the franchise has been rebooted with Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, which was released in 2021.

Assassin’s Creed
The famous Ubisoft franchise got a movie version that starred Michael Fassbender Marion Cotillard and Jeremy Irons. The story, while set in the same universe and having the same elements as the games, has a new story. We delve into the story of Callum Lynch, who explores his ancestor, the assassin Aguilar. Cal ultimately joins the Assassin’s Creed and protects the Apple from modern-day Templars.

Mortal Kombat
We are talking about the 2021 reboot of the Mortal Kombat movie franchise. We are taken into the life of Cole Young. Cole does not know about his inheritance or why there is an assassin attempting to kill him. Meanwhile, the Earthrealm needs its Mortal Kombat champions to turn the tide of the tournament to prevent being conquered by Outworld. Cole is among these champions, but discovers this and his lineage over the movie, finally defeating the Outworld champions along with his companions.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, Ben Kingsley, and Alfred Molina in the lead, this movie is based on the game of the same name. However, some aspects of the other two games from the Prince of Persia game trilogy are also present in this movie. The young prince Dastan works with others to prevent the evil doings of his uncle Nizam.

Rampage
Rampage is the title of the video game franchise from Midway Games, and later Warner Bros. Interactive. The movie is based on a gene-manipulation experiment gone wrong. When the corporation tries to cover up, they end up creating freaks out of animals in the wild. There is the usual whistleblower who is silenced by those in power, and the main character who is also affected by the pathogen and is the only chance against the deadly mutants that the pathogen has created out of the wild animals.

Tomb Raider series
The Tomb Raider series is among the first game-based movies to be released in this century. With Angelina Jolie playing the role of Lara Croft in the first two movies, the third movie saw Alicia Vikander take over. The movies are based on game series, each one focusing on different aspects. Jolie combats the Illuminati and pursues the Pandora box. Meanwhile, we see Vikander seeking to understand her father’s disappearance.
