Spider-Man: No Way Home just crossed over $ 1.5 Billion to become the 8th highest grossing film of all time. As incredible as No Way Home was, it did have a few flaws here and there. Well, we are not here to rant about those tiny flaws but about just one aspect that many fans were not comfortable with. The film was the definition of fan service and within that fan service itself there was a huge flaw which totally spoils a character.
Massive Spoilers for No Way Home and Hawkeye follow below, so read at your own risk.
The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen
That’s right, Spiderman: No Way Home does spoil Daredevil for a lot of fans. The film was packed with crossovers and surprises from Mguireverse and Garfieldverse. Along with that it featured Doctor Strange and Venom as well and to some extent, they got it all right! Well, almost as the one thing that the film did not get right was Daredevil.
Those of you who have seen Netflix’ Daredevil might relate to what I am talking about here. Daredevil was known for its dark and gritty tone which did not quite reflect in the mainstream MCU. The serious and grounded tone of the show is what made Daredevil amazing and fans were always skeptical about the character rights to going to Disney. Ever since Daredevil was cancelled #RenewDaredevil has been trending but this is not how we expected to see him.
In a brief cameo, Charlie Cox’ Matt Murdock (Daredevil) appeared in No Way Home as a lawyer. As expected, this PG13 version of the same Daredevil we adored cracked MCU like jokes and caught a flying brick. The problem here is that this is not the Daredevil we know, despite being portrayed by the same actor. Daredevil went lengths to conceal his identity and here, he just catches flying bricks as blind Matt Murdock in front of strangers. Could you really blame the fans for not liking this?
The Problem
Now you may say that it was just a cameo and that things might be different. Well, it takes a lot of time to build a character and just 5 seconds to spoil it. That’s exactly what has happened with Daredevil. He was reduced to “just another” Marvel character who cracks jokes and doesn’t appear to be serious about stuff. Damn, he wasn’t even serious about concealing his identity.
That’s not it as Hawkeye continues to spoil Netflix’ well-built Daredevil universe. Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk (Kingpin) was also reduced to a PG13 version of himself. Though his brief performance was up to the mark his character was blown to bits by Disney. In Netflix’ Daredevil, Kingpin owned the city with unshakable moral beliefs and this looked like a joke version of Kingpin. Not only was he bested by everyone in Hawkeye, he lacked the brains of the Kingpin we loved 3 years ago.
Whatever we’ve seen from the characters till now is nowhere close to the depth that Netflix version had. The show wasn’t just a battle between Kingpin and Daredevil, but a battle of beliefs and everything they stood for. It seemed like they stood for nothing in MCU’s interpretations.
What’s worse is the fact that the same actors we loved are portraying the Disney versions of the characters that we loved. Over the last decade Disney has made incredible movies but messed up many characters including most of the Guardians of the Galaxy. It seems like Netflix’s Defenders are the next in line to be reduced to joke versions of themselves.
