At this point, who hasn’t heard of Genshin Impact? You’ve probably seen the game’s ads on social networking sites like YouTube, Facebook, and even TikTok. Every day, more and more gamers are drawn to playing the open-world gacha game from HoYoverse. But as with every game out there, Genshin Impact does have its cons. If you’re still on the fence about playing Genshin Impact, keep reading! Along the way, we’ll get down to whether or not you should still play Genshin Impact this year. Stay with us!
Genshin Impact is the biggest gacha game right now
Ever since it was released on September 28, 2020, Genshin has certainly been making different kinds of impact on the video game community. It certainly made gacha games more enjoyable because of its open-world setting paired with the game being free-to-play.

According to activeplayer.io, Genshin Impact has over 60 million active players as of August 2022. It’s expected that at the end of the year, this number will keep growing thanks to how popular Genshin Impact has gotten over the years. There is also no shortage of new characters coming to the game, but HoYoverse does fall short on a few things. Although old players might have gotten the hang of things in Genshin Impact, it’s hard if you’re only starting to get into the game now.
Why you shouldn’t play Genshin Impact this year
If you’re only going to start playing Genshin Impact this year, you might want to reconsider. Admittedly, HoYoverse delivered very well in terms of visuals and storytelling. But if we’re talking about stuff like the game being beginner-friendly, we have bad news for you.
Ascension materials are hard to get
For new Travelers, it will be hard for them to build their desired team comp at first. It’s common for gacha games such as Genshin Impact to incorporate limited-time character or weapon banners, but that’s the problem right there. When we take a look at the characters’ ascension materials (what you need to level them up), they’re usually tied to specific regions.

- One example of this is the five-star Dendro character Tighnari joining the Standard Banner. For players who pull or wish on this banner, there’s a chance for them to obtain Tighnari. Yes, he’s a powerful DPS for your team comps but you need access to Sumeru if you want to ascend him

- This also applies to four-star characters on either the Event-exclusive or Standard banners. If you obtain the four-star Pyro character Thoma, you need access to the Inazuma region. You’ll only reach Level 20 with these characters before you need to farm for their ascension materials
- To get to these regions, you’ll need to play through Genshin Impact’s lengthy Story and Archon Quests. Although they are fun and detailed, these quests can go on for days at a time so you really need patience to get through them
Grinding can lead to burnout
Are your friends already playing Genshin Impact? Then you may have already heard them say a thing or two about how grinding in Genshin Impact is such a chore. We’re not saying we don’t like a challenge, but you’ll definitely need a lot of self-control if you’re planning to play Genshin Impact.
- Genshin Impact can become addicting at the start. But if you’re able to pace yourself, you can avoid feeling burnt out from playing altogether. The only times this is unavoidable is if you’re looking to equip your Genshin Impact mains with the best artifact set possible
- Similar to Genshin Impact’s Wish system, the artifacts you obtain after Domain runs rely on a random number generator (RNG). If your main character is a DPS, you’ll want to equip them with artifacts that boost ATK, right? Although you can easily get an artifact from a specific set, the stats are randomly generated

- Take it from someone who endlessly farmed artifacts for Yanfei. You can’t even imagine the frustration I personally felt when, after using quite a number of Fragile Resins, one artifact came out with the Cryo DMG Bonus stat
Not great for players with F.O.M.O.
We don’t recommend playing Genshin Impact if you have a fear of missing out. In every patch, there are limited-time events where players can take part to get Primogems and other in-game items. Unfortunately, they aren’t around for long as each limited-time event changes along with the current patch.
But in other news, HoYoverse has promised a Trading Card Game. The Genshin Impact TCG will be the first permanent mini-game available so hopefully, this is a step in the right direction for HoYoverse.
Genshin Impact’s story can be difficult to keep up with
We mentioned that one of the game’s main selling points is its rich and interesting lore. However, this is also one of the cons of a huge game such as Genshin Impact. You’ll find it difficult to keep up and follow Genshin Impact’s story because of how complex it can get from time to time.
Sometimes, you may find yourself not reading the dialogue at all during cutscenes because of how complicated some of the stuff can get. Just wait until you reach the Sumeru region.
- In one of the quests, you’ll be stuck in a literal time loop with the Dendro Archon. Even though it’s a game, you’ll find yourself feeling confused and dumbfounded by everything happening
- Nonetheless, the storytelling and writing in Genshin Impact are both impressive. You wouldn’t expect such rich lore from an open-world RPG that is free to play
Genshin Impact has a lot to offer
If you’ve reached this part and you still want to play Genshin Impact, don’t let us stop you. The game offers a fun and enjoyable experience for every type of gamer out there. Plus, the characters all have their own personalities so it’s impossible for you not to find one you relate to.
With how it’s still going strong despite two years already passing, HoYoverse definitely has a lot in store for Genshin Impact players. Just make sure to control yourself! It is still a gacha game so you may be tempted from time to time in spending just so you can get the character you want.
