5 Best Movies to Watch for Basketball Fans

Basketball is one of the most famous sports in the world today. Since its invention in 1891 by the great James Naismith, the sport has gone across the oceans.

Due to its popularity, the sport has also been a hot topic for great movies in the past. Let’s find out 5 of the best movies to watch for basketball fanatics!

1. Coach Carter (2005)

This was based on a true story of high school basketball players from Richmond (California) whose lives were changed by their coach, Ken Carter.

The movie does not just depict the sport of basketball, it shows the harsh reality of what really lies out there in the real world for teenagers in the slum. Coach Carter will teach you things about humility, discipline, intelligence, education, and family. Traits that every athlete should have.

2. Space Jam (1996)

If you wanted to be entertained, then this is the movie for you! The 1996 movie featured basketball’s Greatest-of-All-Time, Michael Jordan. This was more of like an NBA comeback movie for the GOAT. This movie is made for avid fans of MJ, as well as for Looney Tunes fans.

This movie also features some of the legends of the game like Charles Barkley, Muggsy Bogues, Larry Johnson, Shawn Bradley, Patrick Ewing, and Larry Bird.

3. He Got Game (1998)

Before Ray Allen(Jesus Shuttlesworth) became an NBA great and part of the NBA’s 75 greatest members, he played as a rising basketball star in this movie. Just by his name, Jesus Shuttlesworth, the name already speaks for itself. His “Holy Name” was given by his father as a form of guidance for his child.

Although it has been a long time since they last met, his father still wanted him to be more than what he is capable of. Pushing him to every limit until he reaches his full potential. Ray Allen and Denzel Washington were both excellent in this film that played as father and son who had a rift in their relationship.

4. White Men Can’t Jump (1992)

An old myth spread around ballers of any kind in the past, that white men, can’t jump!

It could be true way back then, but that does not mean they were any lesser of a player. This comedy film featuring Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes depicted the mythical differences between white and black ballers.

The two met unexpectedly, in a pick-up game. Billy Hoyle (Woody Harrelson) was a former college baller who tricks other players into thinking he was a chump. He conned Sidney Deane (Wesley Snipes) in basketball games, which lead to him getting beat by Billy.

They became an unlikely pair of basketball players, who conned other players in various courts in Los Angeles for money and fame.

5. Amateur (2018)

Amateur is a movie about an extremely talented 8th-grade basketball player who got discovered by high school team scouts via a viral video. He’s so skilled that he got a scholarship right away. His talent, skills, and potential are unquestionable. But, there’s only one problem – the boy has Dyscalculia, a form of Dyslexia restricted to numbers.

The young athlete goes to prove that his NBA dreams are much greater than his condition. The movie will teach you about hard work, dedication, perseverance, grit, and the will to reach your dreams no matter what.
