Netflix unveiled its catalogue of releases planned for 2023. The schedule features movies and TV shows of different genres for all audiences. However, one of the most anticipated titles among them is Rebel Moon. It is a sci-fi action epic from director Zack Snyder, which might be one of the year’s biggest hits.
- Zack Snyder is making the film with screenwriters Kurt Johnstad and Shay Hatten. They have previously worked together on movies like 300 and Army of the Dead. The director describes the movie as a mixture of Star Wars and Akira Kurosawa, especially his 1954 film Seven Samurai.

- Rebel Moon was originally a Star Wars project by Snyder. According to Inverse, he also pitched it to Lucasfilm Ltd. A THR article from 2021 described the pitch as “a mature take” on Star Wars. After Star Wars was sold to Disney, Snyder decided to re-edit the story into an original feature.
- Snyder hopes Rebel Moon becomes a new sci-fi franchise and has joined hands with streaming platform Netflix. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Snyder shares his hopes for the project, stating, “It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. I hope that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out.”

Synopsis
The story follows a young woman with a mysterious past named Kora. She is dispatched to neighboring planets to seek help when her peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy is threatened by the armies of Regent Balisarius.
- The film pulls its inspiration from Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai, where villagers seek help from seven masterless samurai to help them ward off bandits. However, Snyder shifts the tale into a far-flung galaxy with touches of the sci-fi genre.

Rebel Moon’s Star Cast
Rebel Moon features a star-studded cast, with actress Sofia Boutella, famous for her part in Kingsman and The Mummy, as the leading role of Kora. Other actors in pivotal roles include:
- Ray Fisher as Blood Axe
- Djimon Hounsou as General Titus
- Ed Skrein as Belisarius, the film’s antagonist
- Anthony Hopkins, in a voice-over role as Jimmy, a battle robot

- Along with them, the film will also feature notable actors like Charlie Hunnam, Cleopatra Coleman, Fra Free, Cary Elwes, Jena Malone, and Corey Stoll. The production will unveil more about their roles as the film gets closer to its release.
