What is Netflix House? Streamer’s Planned Retail Destinations Explained

Netflix House will be the new attraction in town! Ever wonder what it feels like to play the death-defying games from Squid Game (without dying, of course!), eat ice cream at Scoops Ahoy from Stranger Things, or take the challenges from The Devil’s Plan? You can finally experience these things, as Netflix plans to create a new destination where fans get to do things something in the streamer’s famous shows. Called Netflix House, here’s everything you need to know about the planned retail destination.

What is Netflix House?

Bloomberg broke the news about Netflix Inc.’s plan to open a new destination where fans can engage in the world based on their favorite TV shows. Mind you, this won’t only be in one place, as the streaming service wants to bring this experience worldwide. Yup, there will be several Netflix Houses for every fan around the world.

So, what can they experience here? Binge-watching isn’t the only thing fans can do in this place when it finally opens. They can go shopping-spree, binge-eating with their favorite series-themed food, and try the games they only see on the small screens in real life. Red Light, Green Light, anyone?

Netflix’s vice president of consumer products, Josh Simon, told Bloomberg that these retail destinations will feature a mix of “retail, dining, and live experiences.”

“We’ve seen how much fans love to immerse themselves in the world of our movies and TV shows, and we’ve been thinking a lot about how we take that to the next level,” he said.

Though the specifics of these retail sites are yet to be revealed, like the exact locations, it’s said to begin in the U.S. in 2025.

Netflix House: Planned Retail Destinations Explained

After closing its DVD rental, which first saw its success in the entertainment business following a 25-year run, Netflix is said to be eyeing to expand its business, and Netflix House is probably the next project it eyes. Aside from gaming, which has already made its way into the service, it also plans to invest in live and interactive content.

This isn’t the first time the company will operate a business like this. For starters, it has an online merch shop that sells everything from collectibles to apparel to other goods based on its most famous shows. It even has red-enveloped sleeping bags, a nod to its recently closed DVD rentals. It also used to have pop-up retail stores, so opening this attraction isn’t new for the business.

In the case of interactive experiences, Netflix has also experimented with bringing the games for Squid Game in the real world with Squid Game: The Trials in Los Angeles. An upcoming reality TV series based on the hit South Korean drama with the same title will also be released in November. So, by the looks of it, Netflix will just put everything together in one store and bring it to several locations.

Will Netflix House be Worth It?

It may be too early to predict the success of Netflix House, considering nothing has come out of it yet aside from the plans, but some question if Netflix still has to do this. Well, the streamer is on its way to making a world of its own with its many successful franchises.

Disney has done the same with its immersive rides, experiences, and attractions in Disneyland. So, there’s probably no way that Netflix can’t do it and succeed, especially with millions of subscribers who may want to experience firsthand what they see in their favorite TV shows.

Though the company’s chief executive officer, Ted Sarandos, didn’t want it to be compared to Disneyland, he said this place is something the patrons will visit a few times a month and not just every year for a different kind of fan and fun experience. This is also their way to promote its content instead of getting a profit from it.
