Considered to be basketball’s greatest of all time by his fans, LeBron James may be en route to passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the number one in all-time scoring. Even at 38 years old, LBJ still plays like he was first drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2003. Now, 20 years later, he is still a perennial superstar despite his age. This leads us to wonder – will LeBron James break Kareem’s record this season?
LeBron James will pass Kareem this season and it wouldn’t be long until it happens
As of this writing, The King is currently sitting on 37, 9965 career points. This is just 422 points shy of Kareem’s 38, 387 total points scored in his career. With James averaging 29.1 points per game in 31 games played this season, and there are about 40 more games left, the superstar forward can easily pass Kareem this season.

To put things simpler, through the first half of the 2022-2023 NBA season, LBJ has already amassed a total of about 900 points, 903 to be exact. Since he is only behind Kareem by 422 points, that would mean he only needs to play about 15 games with his scoring average today. Let’s do the math:
LeBron needs 423 points to pass Kareem. As mentioned, he is currently averaging 29.1 points a night
423 points ÷ 29.1 points/game = 14.53 or roughly 15 games
There are 41 scheduled games left for the Los Angeles Lakers this season, and even if LeBron misses half of the upcoming matches, he will still break the record, given that he plays like he usually does every time he steps on the court. The only time he won’t be able to do so is if he gets injured, which is highly unpredictable. But, knowing LBJ’s longevity, we are very optimistic.

Becoming the first in All-time points is a great feat, but this isn’t LeBron’s biggest hurdle
Despite having three former All-Stars, the Los Angeles Lakers are still a struggling team in the West. With a record of 19-22, they are currently the 12th seed in the stacked Western Conference.
The NBA trade deadline is here but the Lakers organization hasn’t been making any moves to try and repaid their disappointing season. LeBron is also reportedly growing impatient with the front office and the team’s underperformance. Currently, at the bottom half of the league, the Purple and Gold may find it extremely difficult to even get into the Play-In tournament, let alone reach the playoffs now that teams like Dallas, New Orleans, and Sacramento are taking them over.
