NBA: Why Jokic Should Win The MVP (Again) This Season

Nikola Jokic, also known as “The Joker” is arguably one of the most talented, if not the best, big men in the NBA today.

The Serbian has been phenomenal yet again this season. Recently, he has been carrying the whole Denver Nuggets team as they are currently the 6th seed in a loaded Western Conference. He is also averaging crazy numbers while also being the frontrunner for the MVP Award.

Though the Nuggets team is a good basketball club, Jokic still has to carry the whole organization in his shoulders without two of the team’s leading scorers (Michael Porter Jr. and Jamaal Murray).

Take a look at Spiel Times’ Breakdown of why Jokic should win MVP this season

  • How the Denver Nuggets Look With and Without Jokic on the Floor (through 74 games)
WIN % TEAM PPG TEAM APG OFF. RATING DEF. RATING
WITH .612 (41-26) 112.5 27.9 115.0 111.5
WITHOUT  .286 (2-5) 105.0 23.4 112.4 120.2

  • Denver has the lowest second-leading scorer in the league in Will Barton (14.5 PPG).
  • Nikola Jokic also has the highest Player Efficiency Rating (PER) in the league with 32.79. Giannis is 2nd, while Embiid is 3rd.
  • The Joker is currently averaging an almost triple-double –  26.2 points, 8 assists, and 13.5 rebounds a night. He’s also very efficient on the floor, shooting 57.3% from the field and 34.7% from the three. Last season, during his MVP year, he also had similar numbers only now he’s averaging more rebounds per game.
  • Fan votes last All-Star weekend (5,311,167)
  • Jokic Odds of becoming the MVP: +135

All of the things stated above just strongly agree that Jokic should win the MVP again.

The Nuggets are miles better when he is on the court (PPG, APG, W-L Record, Offensive, and Defensive Rating). He anchors both the offensive and defensive ends of the court. He also leads the team in all of the major categories – POINTS, ASSISTS, REBOUNDS, STEALS, and BLOCKS.

The MVP Award is a very close fight between Jokic, Embiid, and Antetokounmpo. But, remove Jokic from Denver, and that team would be Mediocre, to say the least. So, if the awarding would be done today, I would definitely root for The Joker.
