It’s been a wild season and a wild Western Conference so far. For starters, all Californian teams (Lakers, Warriors, Clippers, and Kings) made the playoffs and the biggest highlight of that is the Sacramento Kings. For almost two decades, the Kings have been experiencing a playoff drought. The last time they were in the Playoffs, De’Aaron Fox was still 8 years old. With their current success, the Kings’ head coach, Mike Brown, looks like the clear-cut for the 2023 Coach of the Year award. Here are some of the reasons why we think Mike Brown will win the award this year.

The Sacramento Kings story: 16-year playoff drought now comes to a finish
Despite being in the more competitive conference, the Sacramento Kings made it out alive in the West. They’ve been the laughingstock of the NBA and were mostly overlooked in the past. However, all of it has now changed, thanks to head coach Mike Brown, Domantas Sabonis, De’Aaron Fox, and the rest of the Sacramento Kings.
They have been a hot team the whole season. And, as the third seed, they are statistically the best team in California. Even though they are in the top 3, they are still considered an underdog team as they will be battling Golden State Warriors in the first round of the 2023 NBA playoffs.

The Coach of the Year award is now down to three candidates: Mike Brown (Kings), Mark Daigneault (Thunder), and Joe Mazulla (Celtics)
The Sacramento Kings and Oklahoma City Thunder have turned things around for their team after a while. The Kings returned to the playoffs again after 16 years and the Thunder have established a core of young talents who all looked like they have a bright future. Meanwhile, the Boston Celtics continued to dominate. Joe Mazulla took over the Celtics after Ime Udoka was suspended following his controversies.

Reasons why Mike Brown should win this award:
Many believe that OKC’s Mark Daigneault should be the CoY with his amazing work with the Thunder. Despite being known to tank, they managed to reach the Play-In tournament, even beating Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks to a spot. However, there are tons of reasons why Mike Brown deserves to be the coach of the year.
- As said over and over again, Mike Brown led the team to their first-ever playoff appearance since 2006. Not only that, they’re not just an average team, they are a 3rd-seed team and the best one in California, beating the Lakers, Clippers, and Warriors.
- Last year, they were the 12th seed in the West with a 30-52 record. This season, they have a 48-34 record and is the third-best team in the Western Conference. With Brown, they boost their record as well as their offensive and defensive stats.

- The Kings are a beautiful team to watch. They are obviously well coached especially since Mike Brown has had a great experience of coaching past championship contenders.
- The guys love playing for Brown. His energy on and off the court was amazing to watch, which is a fundamental part of the locker room.
- Although the Kings have two All-Stars in De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis, this team is pretty stacked. Thankfully, Brown was able to utilize everybody on the roster. Moreover, he was able to bring out the best in Malik Monk, Harrison Barnes, and Keegan Murray.
- He is also bringing the Golden State Warriors culture to Sacramento, which could be the reason why they are now better offensively.
Overall, Mike Brown is the easy choice for the Coach of the Year award. With the votes now getting finalized, it’s safe to say he’ll be the unanimous awardee. But, we will have to wait until the latter part of the playoffs for the announcement of the winners.
