There are a lot of reasons why Chet Holmgren was picked 2nd overall in this year’s draft. And, last night, he just proved why. In his NBA Summer League debut, Chet displayed an amazing array of talent mixed with skills against the Utah Jazz summer league squad.
He finished the game with 23 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists. He did all that while shooting an excellent 78% from the field and an impressive 4-for-6 from behind the three-point line. Aside from that, he also broke the record for most blocks in the Utah summer league history by putting up 6 blocks in 24 minutes of playing time. Oklahoma City Thunder wins in a blowout against Utah, 98-77.
When told that he broke the single-game block record, Holmgren confidently said,
“Only six? That’s the record? Oh, well I’m coming to break it again.”
In his summer league debut, Chet Holmgren has shown that he is a unicorn. A 7-footer who seems to can do it all, Chet is a generational talent, to say the least. His output in his first game proved that he can shoot and score at will, plus he can also make plays for his teammates. With his towering height, he can also effectively block shots even though he has a very thin frame.
Just by looking at his 6 blocks, we can see a defensive anchor for OKC for the years to come. In addition to that, he is also very efficient and moves like a veteran. However, he needs to add muscle and strength to his body which is a great asset when he comes to the real hardwood of the NBA.
