The Phoenix Suns are the best team in the league today as they are sitting on the 1st seed on a loaded Western Conference (51-13).
This team hasn’t been this good since the Steve Nash and Mike D’Antoni era. Their run-and-gun style of play put the league on notice during the mid-2000s. D’Antoni was also famous for orchestrating the “7 seconds or less” play for the Suns.
Their best year was in the 2004-2005 season, where they had a winning record of 62-20. Before that, the Suns also had this kind of success with the great Charles Barkley’s MVP season (1992-1993).
Now, with the leadership of veteran point guard Chris Paul and coach Monty Williams, the team is looking bright. CP3 has been an absolutely great leader for the Phoenix Suns’ young core (Booker, Ayton, Bridges, Johnson).
With the 2021-2022 season coming to an end, the Suns are locked for the playoffs. Being the top team today, they also have the chance to make a deep playoff run and even the chip this season. Last year, CP3 and the Suns were just 2 wins away from becoming NBA champions.
With their upcoming schedule, will they reach 62-20 again?
The Suns have only 18 games left for the season. 10 of these upcoming games will be against above .500 teams.
- 10th March (Miami Heat)
- 12th March (Toronto Raptors)
- 19th March (Chicago Bulls)
- 24th March (Minnesota Timberwolves)
- 25th March (Denver Nuggets)
- 28th March (Philadelphia 76ers)
- 31st March (Golden State Warriors)
- 2nd April (Memphis Grizzlies)
- 7th April (Los Angeles Clippers)
- 9th April (Utah Jazz)
With Chris Paul and Devin Booker on the sidelines, it will be a tough road ahead for the Suns. CP3 will rest for 4-6 weeks due to a fractured thumb he acquired before the All-Star break and will probably return in the playoffs. Booker, on the other hand, is out due to Covid-19 protocols and will be ruled out indefinitely.
The suns are still winning games without CP3 and Booker, but it will be difficult to face top teams like the Sixers, Warriors, Bulls, and Grizzlies without them both.
They only need 9 more wins to get to 62-20. Here are different scenarios for the Suns to reach this milestone (or better) again.
- Assuming they beat all teams below .500 in their next games (Thunder, Kings, Lakers, Rockets, Pelicans, and Magic) and win against the struggling Warriors on March 31 (in case they lost to all above .500 teams on their schedule).
- If they slip past the Warriors, Raptors, Clippers, and the Nuggets and beat half of the below .500 teams.
- Phoenix Suns manages to take the win against all of their next opponents aside from their toughest foes (Grizzlies, 76ers, Heat, Bulls, Jazz)
- If they win all home games (total of 6 games) and 3 away games.
Nevertheless, the odds are in favor of the Suns to reach or top their franchise win-loss record of 62-20.
