NBA: Biggest steals of the 2023 Draft class so far

NBA biggest steals of the 2023 draft class

The latest set of rookies featured some superstars in the making and some borderline All-Stars. But, there are some late picks or unknown players that have turned out to be more than what they were expected of. Here are just some of the biggest steals of the 2023 draft class.

Ausar Thompson

He’s not objectively in the “steals” category, but as part of a draft class filled with top prospects, we’re going to name 5th overall pick Ausar Thompson on this list. The reason why Ausar is on this list is because he’s playing exceptionally well compared to the other lottery picks (aside from Wembanyama of course), including his twin brother Amen. Ausar also already solidified himself as one of the best defenders in the league right now, even as a rookie.

Thompson, who was selected by the Detroit Pistons this year is making huge waves in Motor City. The 6-foot-7 combo guard is playing well both on offense and defense and is one of the league leaders in stocks (steals + blocks) so far in the season. Detroit may be a land filled with broken toys (i.e. Marvin Bagley III, James Wiseman, Kilian Hayes, Kevin Knox), but at least they could turn things around with Ausar Thompson, Cade Cunningham, and Jaden Ivey.

Jaime Jaquez Jr.

Before being drafted, Jaime Jaquez Jr. was already seen as a potential game-changer. As a 6-foot-6 emphatic scorer in college, Jaime is doing exactly what he’s supposed to do in Miami. JJJ was selected 18th overall but is obviously one of the biggest steals with how much he can contribute to the Heat culture.

Jaquez Jr. is already putting up good numbers and is shooting an amazing 40% from the three-point line. Just like the guys before him, Jaquez Jr. will definitely fit in this team and maybe even develop into something better.

Dereck Lively II

The Dallas Mavericks caught a live one after picking Dereck Lively II with the 12th pick in the 1st round. Lively II wasn’t expected to be a huge presence for the Mavericks but the former Duke standout really stood out.

Even though he’s only 19 years old, DLive already moves like a veteran. His strength, size, hustle, athleticism, and rim protection are basically what this team has needed for a long time. It also helps that he’s playing Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, two of the best point guards in the league today.

Jordan Hawkins

The New Orleans Pelicans are getting the most out of the 14th overall pick Jordan Hawkins. In 18 games, Hawkins is averaging 13.4 PPG, 2.0 APG, and 4.1 RPG, a very respectable stat line for a rookie.

Craig Porter Jr.

Who knew an undrafted player in the 2023 draft class would make more of an impact than some of the top 10 picks? Scoot Henderson (2nd), Amen Thompson (4th), and Jarace Walker (8th) aren’t living up to their potential yet. Meanwhile, Craig Porter Jr., the undrafted player out of Wichita State, is playing like a veteran point guard for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

So far, Porter Jr. is logging in 8.3 points and shooting an impressive 43% from behind the arc. The 23-year-old youngin is really putting in the work while the Cavaliers’ point guards are currently injured.
