Alas, it’s time to say goodbye to a game everyone thought would rival Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Just this week, MultiVersus has announced that it is scheduled to shut down in June, surprising fans who were hopeful of the brawler that featured pop culture icons. Along with the announcement of the MultiVersus shut down, players are wondering if they can still refund in-game purchases made during the beta period.
MultiVersus will shut down… but not for good
Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games have made the big decision to close the open beta of MultiVersus in June. According to the FAQ from the game’s official website, they cite that they are taking this time to improve the game the game officially launches sometime in early 2024.

The devs go into a little bit of detail about what they are going to improve when MultiVersus servers are shut down. Among these are including new maps, characters, and modes that will “provide more ways to enjoy the game”. They are also looking to improve matchmaking in order to give every player a pleasant gaming experience.
The MultiVersus Open Beta will shut down on June 25, 2023. As of writing, the team has not provided an exact time when the game goes offline. However, they have assured players that they will keep updating the FAQ as we move closer to June 25th.
Can you refund your purchased content in MultiVersus?
Scrolling further down the FAQ page, it seems the devs have predicted that MultiVersus players would want a refund. One question in the FAQ section reads, “Will refunds be available for previously purchased content?”

- Unfortunately, Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games will not be issuing any refunds despite the MultiVersus Open Beta shutting down. Since the game isn’t going offline for good, the team assures players that purchases will carry over once “MultiVersus returns in early 2024.”

- If you are one of the players who invested some of their money to purchase Gleamium or the $100 Founder’s Pack, then the only thing you can do is wait until the game becomes available again. For now, it looks like the devs and publisher are firm in their decision to not issue refunds.
MultiVersus community are not happy with the six-month hiatus
As expected, not a lot of players in the MultiVersus online community were pleased about this. Just by taking a look at the replies underneath the official announcement of the shut down on Twitter, a lot of fans are demanding for refunds. Most users who replied are also calling the entire situation weird and odd.
Feels weird when ppl actively spent money on the game 💀

This is definitely a rare occurrence in the world of gaming. Normally if a game in beta starts charging its players for in-game content, then there would be no reason to take the game offline. The six-month shut down of MultiVersus also has some worried that the game won’t come back in early 2024 as the devs have projected.

Most of the posts on the game’s official Reddit community also talk about the shut down and refunds. Although they are frustrated at this decision from Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games, there really is nothing left for them to do besides wait for the game to launch next year.
Will MultiVersus actually return?
Of course, the real question on everyone’s mind right now is if the game actually returns next year. From the looks of it, not going through with relaunching the game next year will be a disaster for both the developer and publisher.

A lot of players are still holding out hope and trusting the promise of a relaunch. It will be a bad look for MultiVersus if they don’t address any of these before going through with the shut down. If they want to have a larger player base when the game is officially launched, then they have to earn the trust of their target audience first.
Hopefully, Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games figure it out in the coming months. MultiVersus is a game that has a lot of potential. Plus, we haven’t even seen Muscle Man or Johnny Bravo in action yet!
