The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 2 breakdown: All Easter Eggs, ending explained, and more

The Mandalorian Season 3 is back on Disney+ with a new weekly episode (number two) and it’s time to process and break down all the events in it. The newly released installment of Chapter 18 compensates for a slightly underwhelming season premiere of the Star Wars spinoff show. Titled The Mines of Mandalore, it finally gives us a live-action look at the legendary Mandalorian planet.

In the new episode, Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin and Grogu make it to Mandalore, where they confront an array of creepy but well-designed organic and mechanical adversaries. It’s common knowledge for fans that Season 3 of The Mandalorian revolves around Din seeking redemption for taking off his helmet. This sets him off on a journey to his homeworld of Mandalore, where he has to bathe in the living waters beneath the mines to atone for his sins.

Before Mando heads off to his home planet with Grogu, he has to find a memory circuit for IG-11, which leads to an encounter with Peli Motto on Tattooine. However, the part is rare to find and a different droid assists Din on his journey to Mandalore. And along the way, we return to the fan-favorite father-son arc as Din tries to teach Grogu the Mandalorian way.

The new droid confirms that Mandalore’s atmosphere is breathable and not toxic. This implies that Bo-Katan was right about the planet not being cursed. Din tries to reach out for a Mandalorian helmet and falls prey to a trap against a crab-like robot.

We finally get to see Grogu’s Jedi training with Luke Skywalker from The Book of Boba Fett. Usually, it’s Din who saves Grogu, but now it’s the other way around. However, his attempts are in vain as Bo-Katan is called for the rescue.

The Mandalorian Chapter 18’s Mythosaur ending explained

After Bo-Katan saves Din from the robotic creature, he is still determined to bathe under the mines of Mandalore. Once they get there, they find the Living Waters and a plaque about the Mythosaur Lair.

Remember when the Armorer asked Mando where he got the Darksaber and he told her how he won over Moff Gideon? Here, the Armorer spoke of a prophecy: “The songs of eons past foretold of the Mythosaur rising up to herald a new age of Mandalore. Sadly, it only exists in legends.”

Fans were in for an exciting surprise when this prophecy paid off and they finally got to see the Mythosaur in action. When Mando takes a dip in the holy waters, he gets pulled by this aquatic creature. Originally said to be a land-dwelling creature, the Mythosaur has seemingly adapted to living under water, beneath the surface of Mandalore.

Easter Eggs in The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 2

There’s an interesting Star Wars Easter Egg in the replacement droid R5-D4, also called Red, that accompanies Din Djarin and Grogu in this episode. R5-D4 was the droid that short-circuited when Luke Skywalker bought him instead of R2-D2 in A New Hope. Later on, he joined the Rebellion and helped spy on Imperial forces.

As a callback, Amy Sedaris’ Peli Motto exclaims “May the Force Be With You.” She also asks Grogu who taught him to leap like a Lurmen when he force-jumps into her arms. The small Lurmen species was first seen in The Clone Wars.

When Grogu approaches Bo-Katan to rescue Din, she mentions fighting alongside a few Jedi in the past. This is a reference to legendary Jedi like Obi Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka.

Significantly longer in runtime than the season premiere, the second installment is a right step in this direction. The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 2 (Chapter 18) is now streaming on Disney+.
